How can modding a x-box be illeagly?

A friend bought an 'open box' x-box from FS that someone had previously owned. It came with music stored on the harddrive. crappy music to boot.

 

It's only illegal when your stealing and illegally selling games. Its not illegal to mod it. Just like its not illegal to mod other consoles. It's only illegal when you start ripping games you do not own and/or sell them.

Because if I am not mistaken, mod-chips were 'created' for playing imported games, and backups of games you already own.

Just like CD-DVD burners are not illegal unless you are stealing and selling games-movies you dont own.

I think the Live server has a way of knowing if the Box has been tampered with...

 

I suppose Microsoft can make more money this way in some people owning two Xbox's then [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img] One modded and one for live game play?

 

How can it be illegal?

I can see the chip themselfs being illegal - but how could it be illegal for me to take a piece of my own equipment, open it up and soder a chip on to it?

Thereby actually modding the xbox wouldn't be illegal, but obtaining the chip could be.

Just because x-boz live wont allow you to access there server with a modded xbox doesn't mean its illegal, just means that microsoft don;t like it.

 

^^^ They had a big article on that last year. Saying that it wasn't illegal to mod your XBox. Because like you said it is your property. Just obtaining the software that is copied is illegal.
