thats not longer true, you can play xbox live with a mod chip. its just a matter of loading the original microsoft bios with your xbox. if you try playing with an illegal bios, your xbox will be banned. there are ways to get unbanned, but it can be hard.

 

Yeah as far as i knew it wasn't illegal till you started 'stealing' games and such. It only voids your warranty by modding it, just like it would any other console.
