Hi, I noticed my system wasnt working so after checking that all my connections were good, i pulled out my sub and noticed that a small wire that goes from the +ve lead to the cone has come loose.

Is it ok to resolder myself or do i need to take it to a repair shop? Anybody know any good ones in the GVRD? Thanks

 

you can resolder this yourself, but it most likely would break again. what sub?

 

its a Dominator DVC sub. It's pretty decent for my likes

 

well, you can order a chunk of tinsel lead, or find it from a store around Vancouver, do it yourself(replace @ coil) or just repair where its broken...

 

what do you mean by *come loose*? this is odd. usually the tinsel wire, wich is a very fine braid of thin wire around a *string* breaks due to continuous movement and strain and perhaps overpowering. It breaks just at the solder connection where it is least flexible. Some Tinsel is also covered in a rubber insulation. Yet other tinsel is fully imbedded in the spider.

One easy fix is to melt the solder with an iron/gun and pull it thru the hole just a little bit so that the broken part is pulled thru and you solder onto fresh tinsel. But this shortens the Tinsel and may result in less flexibility.

The other option is to replace the tinsel completely IF you can get to the other end to unsolder it. Tinsel wire comes in different sizes to. Check your local pro audio repair shop or speaker reconing shop. A pro audio shop would probably know a local speaker repair shop. Tinsel is not expensive I purchase a couple of feet for like 10 bucks. It will last my lifetime... I used it to fix a sub I got on ebay from a supplyer that promised it was *checked by our technician* yea sure .. with a DC ohmeter and standing still. It was DOA and it would have cost me $20 in shipping to return.. NOT the sub, an infinity 1042w only cost me $25 plus shippping..
