Well, I scoped out my trunk yesterday, and I don't think the IDQ 15v2 is going to work out. The enclosure volume is not a problem, it's just the diameter of the sub. A 15 is not practical in my car, without using the spare tire well (which I do not want to do).

Anyways, back to the drawing board... I'm thinking of going with a single 10" or 12" subwoofer. On the top of my list is the IDQ10/12.. I'm not too concerned about SPL. I'm looking for something quick and responsive. The only reason I picked up the 15 in the first place was the fantastic price I got it for

Here is my current setup (might help narrow down the recommendations)

Head Unit: Nakamichi CD-400
Processors: Image Dynamics IDQ31 mono EQs
Amplification: Xtant 603X (150Wx2 @2ohm stereo, + 300Wx1 @2ohm mono)
Front Stage: Image Dynamics CXS54 components (kick panels)

I currently have my front stage crossed over at 90Hz(24db/oct). Although I have SIPs for 60,70,80,90 and 100Hz. The ID Midbass drivers, although only 5 1/4", play fairly low.

I would prefer something that is designed for small sealed enclosures, as the setup I have in mind does not spare a lot of space. I'm open to any suggestions though.. I'd be willing to spend somewhere in the range of $200-300 CDN, but don't let that limit your suggestions, if you think something would work well, please let me know, I'm a sucker for peer pressure when it comes to spending money on car audio

Thanks,
Mike

Hey Mike, I don't know what car you have but ever considered running that 15" free air (infinite baffle style) ?? Takes up a lot less room in the trunk that way. BTW, if you're having any issues finding IDQ subs, drop me a line.

Hi Tom.. I don't have any first hand experience with IB sub setups, although I've heard IDQ subs are not the best for this type of install. I have considered it, I still think the diameter of the sub may be a little on the large size to create a baffle plate against the back seats. I may have to give it another look-see

As for IB, what sort of difference in the sound could I expect over a sealed enclosure? Have you ever used an IDQ in a free air setup? I know the old IDW's were very popular for IB back in the day..

My car is a 2000 Acura EL. It is based on the 96-00 civic sedan frame. The trunk is fairly deep (back to front), but the height from the false floor to the top metal undershelf is not very tall. An IB setup may work, if I angle to woofer right up against the rear seats. I may give it a try.. a baffle plate would not be very difficult to make. I'd have to seal off my rear speaker openings, and parcel shelf, but that shouldn't be a big deal..

You have a PM

I will stand by the Eclipse aluminum series of subs in small sealed enclosures, they sound nice in pretty much all applications. While I have other favorites, like the MB Quart ref 10 in a small sealed enclosure as well, it pales in comparison to the Eclipse.

This is exact reason why I'm selling my IDQ15 d2 v.2's. I used to have them in a Cherokee...by now that I have a prelude, they won't fit. But like yourself, the volume requirements is not the problem...it's the physical size of the drivers.

I can't get an enclosure that is either 15" tall or wide into the trunk...the opening is too small.

Anyway, I going to go with a pair of Syrke AV12's. Their volume requirements are not bad, ~ 1cf each.

Gary............. two 15" IB !!!!

If I remember rite, if the 3x VAS of the driver is equal to or more then the volume of your trunk, you're good to go. With one 15" you may have a hard time. Two 15" you should be fine. I ran two 10" IB that should not have worked as 3x the VAS wasn't even a fraction of the trunk ............ and nothing bad happened. Then again, I wasn't ever pushing them hard either.

having a front stage playing down to only 90Hz maybe cause a problem. Getting subs to sound good that high may be the problem. I suggest 10's or add 6.5's in the doors for added midbass. Hardest part of a setup IMO is midbass/sub up front

I agree.. I havent had much time to work on my install yet, so no tuning has been done. I do have SIPs for lower frequencies, I will likely use 70 or 80Hz HP for the front stage. I know the 15 would be particularly difficult to blend with 5 1/4" drivers in the front kicks.

The VAS of the IDQ15v2 is 9.09 cu/ft.. I believe my trunk volume is somewhere in the range of ~7-8cu/ft. I think I will hang onto the 15 for a while, and I might give it a try in an IB setup. If all else fails, it would probably make a great home theatre sub project

I think I'm still going to pick up a 10" IDQ or ARC Audio D4, and put it in a small sealed box and do some comparisons.. I've always liked the sound of the smaller IDQ subs..
