Anyone used them? I was looking @ some of them at solen, and I was pondering using them when I get a new car. I know they have limitations as far as SPL output, but are they worth the money to use them?

 

The problem I find with ribbon tweeters is that they are large. Some of the good ones measure to be a 5" cube.

Other than that, I've never found Ribbon tweeters to be hard to listen to.

i think ribbon tweets is to fragile for cars.

I used a Hi-Vi ribbon (RT1C)... It's prolly the lowest end ribbon on the HiVi/Swan line (Adam?) but the unit sounds nice. As for the difference between this unit and a "true" ribbon, I'm not sure. I've used these tweets in my car for the entire winter without any issues. But "true" ribbons - found on speakers like Magnepans (3.5,20's) are apparently so fragile that blowing on them would fracture them. I'm guessing that's like a Raven unit?

Nice airy sound though. I was told they should be crossed high though... up in around the 16kHz range just for ambience. I plan on putting ribbons back in the car this year.

 

I use sony ES ribbons in my system as 'secondary' tweets. I have messed with different x-over slopes, and types, different combos of mounting and using them with other tweets, etc. I found they have superior high end extension, so I chose to run them 16,000hz in the pillars, in conjunction with my kick tweets lowpassed at the same freq. Chinaman has the right idea, very light sounding, a wee bit boxy and harsh in the lower octaves though. I was not a huge fan of them as main tweets, unless they where absoloutely on axis to the listner. However with the h/p up at 16, I have never heard better!

 

so basically they're an ambiance enhancer... could be useful.

 

Ravens ($$) and ribbons in general have a nice freq responce curve (flat as a pancake) and given their price it would almost be a waste to cross them too high ... some of the ribbons go pretty low down to 2K or so but they CAN NOT be run full range.

 

Yeah, when done right, you don't notice them until theyre gone. They can really handle the high end 'sparkle'.
