Yes, but the constructive criticism from those judges is invaluable. The people that you chose last time, would they consider becoming sanctioned judges? People in the music industry typically make the best judges. It usually costs $100.00 per person to attain sanctioning and can judge for a whole year after that.
As for bias, that is frowned upon where I come from. We (judges) need to look with our ears. I personally don't give a how it looks. It's all about the sound. I judged a car this year where the speakers were sitting on the dash, the wires in the trunk were a fire hazard, but I gave him great points for the quality, because that's what my job was to do, judge sound. It's what I'm trained for.
Many of the cars that get worked on in my shop win trophies. It's not because we build them to suit IASCA, we build them to sound good at the price that the customer is comfortable with.
As for bullies, they can be ejected from a sanctioned event. The rulebook is very clear. IASCA makes it easy to keep things fair.

Something to think about...

Keith,
I agree with everything you are saying....
I have heard some really nice $1000.00 systems, and I have been disappointed in some very expensive systems. The problem is that the guys that spent hours upon hours and thousands of dollars feel cheated when they don't win something, so the whining starts. I want the guys to stop whining about points and trophies, and just be proud of the cars they build. My point earlier was that car club guys just come out to show their rides and SQ guys only come out if there are points involved.

Is there some 'car show' world finals for the car guys to aspire to? No.

Most parking lot car shows don't charge you to show up at either.

Actually, "Car Show", guys do aspire to get there cars on Barret Jackson, magazines, TV programs, etc etc...And most car shows that I go to give prizes for the nicest cars in there class and there is always a charge to attend, parking lot car shows that don't charge probably have no trophies...Again, I love SQ! I think that the cars should be shown off and that the reason to build them is because we love music and the cars that we put the sound in.

really??? we did the carshow scene before the soundoff scene, and had to pay an "entry" fee at 95% of the shows held....3% or so were by donations, and 2% were actually free. rarely did we get anything out of it other than a bunch of grubby fingerprints and seeing a bunch of people that don't know what "do not touch" means.

of course there are lots of times where an unofficial "meet" is suggested, and a bunch of people show up, but it's not really organized, and realistically it's just a bunch of people "hanging out"...

I have been think ing of doing the "hanging out" at the shop on Friday nights, helping guys understand good sound, and SPL and how to fiberglass etc. etc....
This way when we either go to a car show, or a SQ or a SPL, we can show off our rides. We need to get back to a team mantallity, at least in our area.

Hey Bill,

I'll be the first to admit that after many hours of building, recognition is what I look for. When I get criticism, I want to judge them for their comments by listening to what they think that they heard so that I can either go back to them and refute it or I go back to the drawing board to fix my issue. It's the only way that i know of to make my car sound the "best".
As for whiners, I like to ask them simple questions like, "what makes your car sound the best"?, Why does your car have better imaging? How can you get better depth from the position of your speakers? How did you do your final tuning? What made you cross your speakers over at the level that they are?
If they can answer these questions, then I have a reference point to go from. If they can't, then they need help, and they'll know it and stop whining.

Would you consider having a sanctioned show next year? There are people out there that can offer guidance and provide quality judges. There will also be a judges training in May in Washington State.

I think his show is sanctioned this year but its sanctioned USACI rather the IASCA. I think him doing usaci in our area is the right way to go about it as there is alotta people that have systems but very few built for spl and I cant think of one car really that has a solid sq system in it either. I have nothing but much respect for the sq guys as I live clean sounding music. To get my house audio to sound good I had to dump near 6grand so I could only imagine how much it would cost to get a car to sound just as good if not better. One day I plan on trying to join the sq world as well. Next year i am gonna be taking my camera and getting lots of pictures of sq cars to give me the right direction. I am hoping i can do sq on a budget as my wife and car audio are like oil and water. Anyways point chasing or not points chasing its easier to just respect everyone for there views and hope they can see other peoples perspectives as well. Lets all just work together and make car audio comps big again.

Yes, I will do a sanctioned show next year...and the Creston Show this year is also sanctioned, although I have been rather confused about the points for SQ... My understanding is that James who is judging the show is qualified to do so, although not IASCA. He traditionally does USACI, DB Drags, Bass Race...I will be more up to speed next year on all the sanctioning etc. etc.
By the way this is the 4th annual Creston Valley Sound-off, and this is the first time SQ has been such a discussion.

im sure he talked to moe he could judge the iasca portion since james is former world champion in sq as well spl hes done it all in car audio in any catigory so wouldnt be an issue there

in order for the competition scene to grow we need goals , and things to work for , for some of us that means world finals , or canadian championships were the pts and certifieds come in , if your just starting out attending a large show or a regional finals is a huge step in getting into the scene , when a rookie goes to a couple show and attends a finals and places in the top 3 thats huge for their confidents , and motivates them to spend money at retail shops , so its a win win for everyone , the awards part is really key to getting rookie competitors interested when somone sees that theirs a 5 ft trophy or an award thats really unique up for grabs they will do whatever it takes to get in position to be competitive to win , ive seen this time and time again , at the show i put on last month few days before the show i had 6 people show up to test and tune just because they wanted the large trophy that was up for grabs , was great to have people to help out , I just think when it comes to shows like that medals and trophys are a huge thing when it comes to the guys who are either driving 10 plus hrs or the rookies were trying to get envolved
