Compustar or Viper?

Hey guys

I can get a new viper vx790 pager alarm for $450 CDN, or a slightly used Compustar Alarm/Starter 2WFM-AS for $350 CDN.

Which alarm is better, and which is a better buy?

viper is iso 9001 certified is compustar? vipers range is dictated by fcc standards, is compustar? that explanes the range issue, viper never uses high current on board relays on there main boards, but compustar does. viper build is better, the icons are easier to read and the egronomics are more customer friendly. dude save onother pay check and buy the viper. i have installed both and viper viper viper.

ok guys this is long but its what Minas from DEI usa had to say in response to the diff between the responder790 and other 2 way products..


The Responder is based on FSK (frequency shift keying) modulation which is an FM modulation technique that operates in a digital format (modulates the carrier using digital signals rather than analog).
The Responder is not based on spectrum technology.
The following are a few of the dominating and critical specs that define the performance of 2 way systems such as our Responder, and several other of our competitor’s systems:

1. Transmit power
2. Receiver sensitivity
3. Encryption

1. The transmit power is the amount of radio frequency energy radiated from the handheld or in vehicle unit. The FCC limits the amount of energy allowed to be transmitted. The amount of power transmitted directly affects the amount of range the unit will have, this is why some competitors disregard FCC rules and transmit much higher levels than they're allowed. However, the FCC does have a provision where it allows higher transmit power levels when the transmission time is reduced (a short burst instead of a long data streams). The Responder takes advantage of this rule by transmitting the information at more than 20 times the rate of our competitors yielding a much shorter transmission time. This allows us to transmit higher power levels without breaking FCC rules.

2. The receiver sensitivity is the specification that defines how small of a radio frequency signal can be detected by the receiver circuit. It also directly defines the amount of range a system will have. Because we transmit information at a much faster data rate than our competitors, we had to design a receiver that can handle the faster communication and maintain good sensitivity which is a contradicting requirement as one degrades the other.

3. The responder has the full 2 to the 66 rolling code encryption used in most of our systems which is a highly secure communication protocol. Because of our high data rate transmission hardware, we're able to support such a high level of encryption and security.

Most of our competitors use a non code hopping, low security, low speed transmission protocol. This effectively typically yields a non-secure, short range system. To overcome the range issue, they "cheat" by transmitting higher power levels even if illegal. The 20 to 30 bit non code hopping transmission protocol they use is non secure and would be a breeze to catch with a "code grabber" device.

The Responder was developed using an approach which has optimized all the contradicting physics, FCC rules and security issues involved. The Responder is the only system which has full code hopping 66 bit encryption, has great range (better than some of our illegal competitors) and is FCC legal. Another inherent benefit to our fast communication protocol is that we've achieved pseudo full duplex communication. This is the equivalent of having the remote and vehicle communicate to each other at the same time which translates into an instant feedback after sending a command from the hand held unit.
