just read what Harsim INC. stated in his post...
go with the Viper all the way, screw the distance you can start your car from, if you want that super distance just buy a remote starter kit and get a radio buddy to up the current, it's easily done, i'm assuming that you want some security, and right now Viper, 1. is legal to own and operate, 2. is one of the hardest to decrpyt or "catch" 3. although it's distance isn't phenomenal(sp?) it's still quite impressive 4. the fact that have instant notification if anything happens with your car is a huge plus, 5. ohh and ya if you live in a city, the whole legal thing is a big plus, especially if you work in a down-town area, car alarms or any radio device that operates on illegal frequencies can fudge around with something or other by accident, and if it's an important something or other it messes around with, you will get busted

i've never heard anything about compustar product not being fcc approved. As an installer, compustar is one of the easiest units to install, easy programming, and no extra external relays, it's all one nice package. The only downside for consumers is that the compustar 2 way remotes aren't idiot proof. If 2 way is what your after, go with the company that started and perfected it. I have installed the DEI (viper) stuff in the past, takes way longer, and you have more stuff to stry and hide in the vehicle. Just my 2 cents.

IMO, the brand name of a security system is NOT as important as the conciencious installer, putting the system in place properly.
Bells and whistles are convenience features, not SECURITY features.
Find a good installer first, then consider the alarm and how you plan to use it.
On 2 way alarms, if the remote goes off in your pocket, will you be running to the car, or calling the cops??
Auto Start is a nice FEATURE, especially to get the heater/Air Conditioner started.
What are you after?

i had a compustar in my truck which was my 149 bass racer, and the compustar alarm didnt like the bass it was weird, i found my self haveing to reset the sensor alot. but i had the Viper in my impala and that was my daily driver and it hit 154 on the TL and the alarm setup was the same as the compustar and i have no problems with it
