Cap Voltages

Please take it easy on the flaming, but i just read someone say voltages dont matter. Well at my work we have some heavy duty caps laying aroung, But there rated at like 250v, so needless to say I havent tried using any of them. Just curious if they would work or not. Sorry for sounding like a complete newb but I've never really had much experience with capacitors before. I know how they work where I work, just never been willing to sacrifice my gear for what if.

caps specifically for car audio are usually rated 16, 20 or 24 volts.

Any of those will work, won't matter. If you have a cap rated 250v, its probably made for a high voltage power supply, and probably won't work as well for car audio. But it won't hurt anything to try it. I suspect it will drain your battery faster due to leakage. And by faster, i mean it might only take 6 weeks to drain your battery rather than 8.
