is it true that if you have a battery in the trunk that it has to be vented? even if it a dry cell type?
and if you run 2 batteries can they be of different types, like having a odyssey and a optima in parallel?

^ The concern is a potential local area explosion from escaping hydrogen gas under charging conditions rather than asphyxiation.
The safest bet is to vent them. The Smart car I was working on the other day however, had a standard lead acid battery factory installed not only in the passenger compartment, but about a foot from the factory ashtray...
