Help- Deck is cranked and audio distorts before it gets loud enough
I posted the same in the installation thread- I figured this was a better place after I looked around a bit. Sorry for the double post.
Hey guys,
I've had a 99 Toyota Tercel for a few years now, and finally got around to putting some decent speakers in it- and a friend gave me an older Blaupunkt deck to install as well.
I installed 4" Alpine speakers in the front- the SPS400 model, and soldered the Blaupunkt wires to a new toyota harness.
Now I'm able to hear my music, but I've got to crank the volume to about 60 out of 80 to get a reasonable level (while not even driving). If I'm on the highway I can't even get it at a decent level without it distorting. I'm not a fan of SUPER loud music, but I can't even get it at a decent level while driving (without it distorting from cranking the deck so high).
I've checked the ground... swapped negative and positives on the speakers... and it's still happening. It was also doing the same thing with an older crap Koss deck I had in there for a few months. It's also happening with a CD and with my iPod dock that is played via radio...
Are 4" speakers just not that loud? I currently have no rear speakers and don't really want to buy any right now.
Any help would be appreciated- I've looked all over the internet and can't find much.
Thanks a ton

How's you battery? Get a DMM and meter everything to eliminate other possibilities. I just helped a friend out with a system in his Caddy, the first day everything was all fine and dandy, but the second day as soon as the headunit was turned up above half volume the front speakers would distort terribly while the subs would still move. Upon closer inspection we found the voltage to be dropping to 10.5 volts just by turning the cd player/amplifiers on. Anyways look into it... BTW we got a new battery and we get hardly any voltage drop below 14 with the car running...

I just replaced the battery with a heavy duty new one a few months ago... I honestly think I was just expecting too much from the 4" Alpines. Even though, I still think they SHOULD be louder than what I'm hearing... Should I really have to turn my deck to 50/80 while not even driving to hear it? I'll probably just get some 6.5" for the back and hope it's full enough while I drive...
Thanks for the help

but a 4" isn't going to get all that loud, it can be impressive in the correct enclosure but it is a 4" driver... what size were the factory speakers?

Ok I'm going to ask an obvious question. Did you hook it up urself, and did you do it properly. You shouldnt have to fade out in order to hear your speakers when you are driving. Sounds to me like something is not hooked up right.
