A tercel is a basic level car from Toyota and I have never ever run across one that had a factory amplified system. You have a classic case of expecting too much from too little. Want louder, bigger speakers to handle lower frequencies better will yield more sound. Are these the speakers that are dash mounted and pointing at your ankles or are they door speakers?

Come to think of it, MR2NR is right... I also can't remember seeing a Tercel with a "premium" system in it ***slaps forehead***

And then when you get a taste of what better starts to sound like you will want more, and then more. Before you know it you will become addicted to car audio and spending money and wasting all your free time just like the rest of us.

I got a nice little Kenwood 4ch amp I can let you have for $80. Can't remember the model # of the top of my head. It is an older model with speaker level in as well as RCAs. I just had it in to the shop to have it repaired and is guaranteed to be 100% functional.

Hmm... OK, so first off- thanks for all the help and ideas guys- I really appreciate it.

Here's what's new- I decided to try wiring the speakers directly to the HU just to see if it was different. It was exactly the same. Bringing us to the answer that the 4" alpines along with my (older?) Blaupunkt, isn't what I want.

What do you guys suggest I do? Buy a (not so expensive) amp and hope the Alpines do their job better? Or buy some 6.5" speakers for the rear? I am currently in the middle of a $20,000 renovation on my new house... so I really have close to $0.00 to spend- but I really need something a bit better.

Suggestions on what models to buy also would be great.

Thanks again

Are your speakers up front door or dash (I can't recall where they mount).

The speakers are in the door... basically at my feet. I don't think I can fit anything bigger in there unless I cut the metal.

Also, just so you guys know... I'm not looking to have my tunes cranked for the whole world to hear. I have a tercel for crying out loud- which I love, by the way! I just want tunes that I can hear and turn up reasonably loud every once in a while when it's called for.

Part of my income is from a small recording studio that I own - I'm rocking Focal Twin6BE studio monitors for all you audio guys I just have zero idea about car electronics.

Thanks guys

PS: I don't have a wife! So I'm just gunna tell myself it's for the house. Haha
