Help- Deck is cranked and audio distorts before it gets loud enough

Alpine has the KTP-445, so it is possible that power figure is coming from that, hard to tell. Details aren't exact just yet. If there is a factory amplifier, it will need to be bypassed.

interesting numbers, unbelievable for HU power... could there may be a factory amp somewhere eh? a HU typically cranks out an anemic 10 watts (some will claim 50 Watt peak on that 10 watts too) seems unlikely a Tercel got an uber HU
but a 4" isn't going to get all that loud, it can be impressive in the correct enclosure but it is a 4" driver... what size were the factory speakers?

The stock tercel speakers were 4" as well hense me installing these. I did it myself- got a harness and matched the wiring. The same thing happened on two different aftermarket decks.

Ok, let me try and explain a little more clearly.
I have a 99 toyota tercel that I took the stock deck and speakers out of. I have replaced the HU with a blaupunkt austin deck that says it's 200 watts. The alpine speakers are the 4" SPS400 model...
I took the stock gear out and just hooked the new deck's wires, to a toyota harness that I bought from Canadian Tire- and plugged that into the stock harness. For the speakers I just snipped the harness off the stock speakers and soldered them to the Alpines and plugged them back into the stock speaker harness. I've even tried switching those around to make sure that I didn't mess that up by accident.
Are you guys saying that there could be an amp inbetween the stock harness and the speakers? Should I just try rewiring everything from scratch? Could it be the volume it's supposed to be and I'm just thinking it should be louder? Again, while just sitting in my car with the engine running I have to have the volume at 50/80 and much past that it starts to break up and sound terrible. Quieter and I can hardly hear it...
Anyway, thanks guys for the help... I do appreciate it.

your headunit is not 200watts. manufacturers boast those ridiculous numbers to make them seem more powerful than they are.
the headunit is no more than 15watts/channel.
also, you have one pair of lower end 4" Alpine speakers, in a tercel. which are probably not deadened very well.
you have very little power going to very little speaker in a noisy environment.
i think you are just expecting too much from the setup. check if your headunit has crossovers and filter out some low end from the alpines. along with turning off any bass boost etc.

and that brings us full circle back to ^ assuming everything is wired correctly, 10 watts into any speaker will be marginal and a 4" will have no real bass

I'm sorry, but I put sps400's in a Harley running off of an Alpine CDA-9886 deck, and they had enough output to overcome the wind and exhaust.... I would suspect a factory amp, and/or improper deadening as mentioned above somewhere. Low end output is sad to say the least, they are 4" speaks, what more is there to say? Not to say any of the advise above is bad advise, I'm just a little skeptical.

Yeah... I have a friend who also said he had some real small speakers that pumped pretty loud.
Can someone give me some more info on how a "factory amp" would be effecting this and how I'd go about bypassing it- if there is one?
What about deadening? I'm very uneducated when it comes to car audio.
Thanks!
