How Much Power Do I Need?

Hey everyone. Im new here.

Anyways, im planning on purchasing some used subs. They're 2 12" Alpine Type R subwoofers with a custom enclosure built to the specs. The guy is selling them for $300 for the set. The only concern that i have is these subs run at 4ohms and i was just wondering how powerful of an amp i would need to run these subs?

Would it be more practical for me to pass up this deal and get subs at 2 ohms?

What is the voice coil configuration of those subs? If they are dual 4 ohm subs just rewire each sub in parallel and wire the subs in parallel as well. That will give you a 1 ohm load.

Using a 4 ohm load isn't a bad thing. If you can find an amp that puts out 1000 watts at 4 ohms and fits within your budget then that will work just fine.

yupp..the advantage of going this route is if you decide to upgrade to more powerful subs later on...you can still use the same amp at a lower impendance for more power

Do you know if they are dual 4 ohm or dual 2 ohm? That will determine how to wire them and the amp that you should look for.

And I have a killer deal on a 1 ohm mono amp from Exile right now. Their top of the line X1200.1 is on sale for $300.00 + tax and shipping. Waaaaaay below normal dealer cost on it.

I know of a good company in the lower mainland that can help you to reconfigure your subs to attain the 2ohm configuration that you'll need and that can wire up an amp for you at the same time. Call SoundsGood Auto @ 604-961-8626. They're in Coquitlam over by IKEA. They ROCK!
