overlapping crossovers

my basic question is what happens when you overlap two different crossovers?

i've got a jvc deck and am using the sub out to send a signal to my rockford sub amp. the x/o points on the deck are 116, 80 and 50 Hz. i'm finding the 8o is a bit high and the 50 is too low, i'd prefer something around 60. the rockford amp has an adjustable x/o, so i can pick the point i want. the problem is that the jvc deck cannot turn off the x/o, so i have to use one of the points it offers. i've thought about just using the rear pre-outs to go to the rockford amp but i really like being able to adjust the output level of the sub from the deck.

i've heard that overlapping different x/o points can cause pahsing issues and affect the slope of the x/o as well. any thoughts on this issue? i would probably choose the 80hz point on the deck and then set the sub to somewhere around 60.

what u have heard about the overlapping has to do with crossing 2 diff subs at 2 seperate points probably.
Anyways, your idea will work fine.

Set the deck xo at its highest and then the sub amp as you wish as long as it is lower. You will get a double slope effect but it should not affect the sound at and below the amp xover frequency .

^^do what Zoomer said and it will work well. I ran the curves on WinISD to get an idea of the final curve, and assuming that the deck and amp both have 12 dB/oct crossovers (common), the the combination results in approximately a 3rd order (18dB/oct) slope with normal phase and group delay responses.

awesome, thanks guys. i was poking around on the net just before i made the post to see if i could find a program that would show me the curves i was looking for but didn't have any luck.

cheers

well i tried it out, deck set at 116 and amp at around 70 - something just didn't sound right. i played with the point on the sub a bit but it didn't seem to help. anyway, for now i'm just gonna use the 80hz point on the deck and not use the x/o on the amp at all. it's pretty close to what i want anyway.

Really?....not to nit-pick but the last time I checked a -18db/oct slope reverses the phase of the signal.....

If you set the amp at 60hz (or where-ever you like it) and the deck at 80hz, you can still use the deck to control the sub level and you will get minimal interference between the 2 units.....
