Are screws necessary?
Like Father Yuli said. Screws and nails are only there until the glue dries. IF you are gluing and butting your mdf you may want the use some screws. If you are dado-ing (grooving) your joints glue and brads are more than enough. Also keep in mind if you dado you joints, you will basically have 50% more gluing surface = added strength. The core of mdf will draw more glue than the outside skin will.
i use nail gun and lots of wood glue. havent came apart yet and its abused daily lol f(amilly van) its a bare box but there is alot of crap that has to sit on it. bang on it. and its still holding great
ya its way overkill lmao. im a finishing carpenter by hobby. i do furniture and now sub boxes. overkill is better than underkill. dont do it twice only once. thats what i go with hahahahah
next box tho is with screws

Yep, that's right about the glue only holding onto the surface layer of the MDF. MDF can and will pull apart in layers itself, even though it's just thought off as a mush of sawdust and glue. I don't know exactly how they make it but I'm guessing they lay it down in layers as you can see these layers separate if the wood is being pulled apart. Anyway, I built a small sub box once for an 8 and screwed and glued and then took the screws out, since I wanted to round-over the edges for a smoother edge look before carpeting. After moving the box around in and out of the vehicle a few times, one of the walls started to pull away. Had to end up brad-nailing it and then later on, put the regular screws back in.
