thin box design for 12"
okay so heres my plan, im building a sealed box for my car because i just dont want to deal with the technicalities of going ported, so i will be running a 12 inch woofer and the box will be between 1.5-2 cuft depending on the woofer i choose and all that, but without getting too technical all i wanted to know was if there is any type of acoustical problems with building a box thats only 3-4 inches tall internally, compared to typical box designs?
i basically want to build a box 3' by 3' that will cover the floor of my trunk but i can still put things on top of like gym bags and groceries, the trunk is 16-17 inches deep so i will still have about a foot of room on top of the box for my regular stuff, the sub will be mounted upside down at the front corner of the trunk by the back of the seats
the last ported box i built had rounded off corners inside to smooth out the air flow, would this help in a sealed box? i will also will be bracing the inside of it because i know a 3x3 piece of mdf will definitely have some flex in the middle of it, anything else you guys would suggest?

I can't see why making a box like that wouldn't work. It'd be similar to a slim box built for a truck. To get gross 1.5 cu.ft. internal you'd only need 24" x 26" x 4" or 24" x 36" x 3", 2 cu.ft. would be 24" x 36" x 4" or 32" x 36" x 3". But unless you are running more than 1 sub, I don't see why you would need more than 1.5cu.ft., and you could probably even get good results running 2 slim subs, dropped in with grills, in 1.5cu.ft. Like you said, it depends on your sub choice.

awesome thanks for your help. the only other thing i need now is an amp with hi-level inputs! i cant see to find any, other than mtx, or if someone could recommend a good 2channel LOC and where i could buy this online, that would help a lot

Alpine thin type-R works in very little airspace. I've seen as low as .25 cubic ft. Not ideal but they are designed for big output in small space. .35 cubes for the 10 and .6 for the 12 is what Alpine suggests. They also take more power than the previous type-R lineup. All Alpines MRP- amps have high level in. 500, 1000, or 2000 RMS @2 ohms. Just food for thought if you haven't picked out gear yet.

yeah thats my only local option is alpine, the only thing i dont like about their hi-level inputs is you still have to run a remote wire, most others have automatic turn on, but also their thin type r's are like 450 bux i could buy three 10" regular type r's for that, space isnt an issue ive got room for 2-3 cuft if i needed it, right now im either going with a kicker zx400.1 which would actually be like 450 rms cuz kickers are rated low, with an 8"solo-baric l7, for 450 bux online tax in, or if i buy local i can get a 10" type r with an mrp m500 for for about the same price, except the kicker amp doesnt need the remote turn on when you use the hi-level inputs and it looks a bit nicer, i know the kicker l7's are good for spl but what about SQ? its technically got the cone area of a 9" woofer, but the type r is a 10" cone area so technically would it do a better job of re-producing the lower tones? i listen to a lot of punk/rock/pop but mainly hip hop when im cruising or driving with friends

I was Lookin at the depth of your box and the alpine was the first thing I thought of cause I've used them with success. Problem with the alpine amps is you'd have to run a pair of thins to get the 2 ohms their amps work at as theyre only single 4 ohm VC. All their other subs can be bought in dual 2 or 4 ohm so no worries there. Could you kick the back of the box up at rear seat to sit the sub on like a 30 degree angle to get some more room for magnet? It would open up your options for subs. I'd suggest if you listen to a lot of hip hop/rap go with a 12 for sure. They're almost double the surface area of a 10 so you'll go tons deeper. Do 2 if you can. Their typeR 12s still only call for .9 cubes sealed
