1000+ watts into a single 12JLW6v.2?
#1
I am going to be running this setup once my box is finished. I have decided to go with a a sealed enclosure because of its better power handling capabilities. I have a JBL bp1200.1 that will be running a Jl 12W6v.2. I know that on paper that I will be overloading the sub but from experience if I keep the gains down I should be OK. I can only get an 8ohm or 2ohm mono from the woofer so of course I will be choosing the latter. Thus my amp outputs max power @ 2ohms.
I know that I pretty much answered my own question but I would like to hear others' opinions. If I keep the all of my "bass" settings and amp gains down, would I be doing any damage to my woofer in the long run? Keep in mind that it's just a daily driver. Furthermore, am I running too much power to that one driver?
Thanks

To an extent, it's better to have the setup overpowered than underpowered. You can take advantage of getting the most out of the sub and at the same time feeding it a constantly clean signal; better headroom from the amp is what I mean, because you get to keep your gains way low. You avoid clipping the signal that way.
Heck, I plan on feeding a set of 8" paper woofers with 360 RMS and some HT tweeters with about 180 RMS. I have my reasons for doing this.
Edit: That's 360 RMS and 180 RMS for EACH woofer/tweeter, respectively.
I feel that for a subwoofer though, it's best to have a subsonic filter setting on it, because that much power can have a sub move too far too easily with the wrong note (box dependant).

Well,
The JBL 1200.2 is a mono block amp. At 1 or 2 ohms you get the full power of the amp 1200 watts rms. At 4 ohms you get half of that 600 watts. So I am assumin here that at 8 ohms you would then have to half that number again to make it 300 watts rms. I am not willing to put the amp down to 8 ohms it'll be a wast of my money and amp. I'm getting my box next week and I'll let you know how it sounds. Keep the replies and opinions coming though.
Thanks

I run a 12W6V2(off a JL 500/1) and love it. I don't know how excited I would be about pushing over 1000 watts to it though. I think 1200 watts or so to a couple of them could be pretty cool though.

I'm pumping over 1000 watts rms out of my xtant to a kicker s12l7. The kicker is supposed to handle only 750 watts rms but it takes the bass just fine in my sealed enclosure. I really pound my system and it's very happy running at an 80 - 85% volume level from the deck; although the amp is only running at 1/4 power.
In my opinion you should be fine.
