I do not believe for a second that anyone on this forum can hear a difference between any kind of solid state amp..... that in my books, is rediculous....
why do you say that (off topic)

id think speaker wire and interconnect design would make more of a diff

no, like 0.999% pure silver 28 awg, cotton insulated interconnects

but comparing reg zip cord to other higher end speaker wires is a joke, I agree, but theres diff designs out there

OK maybe Iam missing something here.... RobM on carsound has made posts totally agreeing that you can hear the diff between amps and interconnects.... I was like WTF ?

Then after awhile you see he is being totally sarcastic trying to get a rise out of the snaudiophiles on the board....

you guys dont really belive that you can hear the diff between amps interconnects and speaker wire ???? Maybe you guys are just pulling my chain....

Well I am still under that impression, but I want to try out a set to see if I can hear a diff or not. The guy who made the speaker cables I am going to make claims they beat out cables costing ALOT more, some very well respected names as well. Usually its the most expensive cables people rave about, not some DIY basement creations.

Haunz, it's a big topic, and one that I don't believe is entirely related to the physical objects in question. I think basic answers lie in how we hear, and what we want to hear. I'm sure we've all convinced ourselfs that something horrible sounds OK at some point. For that very reason, I think that people will try to percieve a difference so hard, that they will.

So there you have it, I'm admitting that the Placebo effect exists, and that people have the ability to fool themselfs.

Here are my beliefs in a nutshell:

1.) Amps can sound different. Why they sound different is a good point of debate.

2.) Wire can sound different, and there is more to this than I will ever comprehend. I think that conductor metalurgy (including ends), dielectric material, conductor geometery, conductor shielding, and of course the environment the conductor is being used influence results.

3.) EQing is a mystery. While I have played and played with EQing in cars, the house, and even sound re-enforcement, I still don't get it. I'll leave it at that, because I'm not talking about audio basics. There are things that happen when EQing I can't explain...I'll leave it at that.

4.) Speakers can sound the same. (I thought I'd throw this in here as a point of logic.) If you lose your ability to define differences due to fatigue or even by convincing yourself that you don't hear a difference, speakers can sound the same. This is the component that most people easily define differences in...but then...I'm sure you've all heard "I can't tell the difference, I'll get the less expensive one" before when dealing with speakers.

We all hear and then interpret things differently, I don't think, feel, or believe this to be unhealthy. Especially if we are all able to express and respect each other's oppinions.

^ Well said...

I like to follow the line that while there may be many measurable differences between amps, interconnects, and even speaker wire... you cant tell the diff between one and another unless something is wrong with thier design or it has malfunctioned....

Hearing or reading about the results of various ABX compairisons is a pretty quick cure for any placebo effect...

Some people do make me laugh... Ive auditioned more then one system that sucked kind of bad... but all the equipment is bose or something and everyone else is like 'wow, that sounds amaizing'

I guess Ill add that 2 similar speakers (size, fs, ect) probably will sound very similar in the same installation.... although one may handle more power, have more linear Xmax, add less distortion even at low levels.. ect..

Differences you can hear are pretty small between speakers operating in thier linear range... IMO...

Proof positive any topic on car audio can drift to either the audibility or SQ of amplifiers/ interconnect wire or the value of capacitors in a system
