98 VW jetta dash speakers

Hey there, just a question to anyone that might know - the speakers in the dash of my jetta (i'm guessing) have a built in crossover?? since two sets of wires go into the housing, and if i unplug either/or, the door speaker stops working. Any way i could upgrade the in dash speakers without buying a crossover? or re-wiring the whole area...?

There is no crossover - that is just the way the factory wired the two drivers in parallel. THe one set of wires goes to the deck and the other set of wires heads off to the door. This is pretty common on cars with both dash and door speakers. Actually, if you were adding components it makes for a convenient place to tie in a passive crossover.

i've already upgraded the 6" door speakers...so only thing left would be either some tweets or 3.5" (since there's enough room). just not sure how to wire it, if i were to get something new...?

thanks

I have a 98 Golf and just installed some speakers in my dash. I'm believe it's the same setup for a Jetta. I put in 4'' (they fit) in the dash although getting them secured is tricky because of the angle of the windshield.

As for the wiring, I'm not sure if I did it correctly but I just merged the two +'s wires together and same for -'s and it seems to work fine to me.

Good luck with your install!
