Yes, cover the rears. There are some products sold to do such a thing, or else a little fiberglass pod will work just as well if not better.

my rear speakers are only covered by a thin carpet like materia(subs pretty much under them)l...a bit rigid...is that alright or should I fab something out of plastic?

Get rid of the rear speakers all together... rear fill is overated! Ditchem and add some more to your front end
