Question Amps and 2-ohm components???

I have a older Kicker ix704 amp bridged into 2 channels, will it run these??

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-5aKHEyF...410&I=108607CS

I also have an older Orion 200.4 bridged into 2 channels, will it run these??

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-5aKHEyF...410&I=108507CS

I ask because these speakers are 2-ohm, and I'm just not sure with the amps being a few years old. I've had the system in for a few years now with 6 1/2's up front running off the Kicker, and the 5 1/4's in the back running off the Orion. A couple 12 inchers on a Memphis 1000, yada yada bla bla bla.

Will these amps work with these 2-ohm speakers??

Unhappy

Either one will work, but they will not be happy about it. Even though you're not going to be drawing a lot of current running the coax's, they will run hotter than they should and you'll need to keep an eye out for heat issues.

Begs the question why are you doing this? Are the present speakers not loud enough? According to this, http://www.kicker.com/06/tech-suppor...4ChAmpsMan.pdf you're already getting around 250w per side up front and close to that in the rears...pretty solid setup... ....seems to me if that's not enough volume, it might be time to get the ears checked....

The volume is plenty, but the speakers I have now are 5-6 years old. I can hear some crackling starting in one of the rear tweets, and I had popped the coil in a front mid and just replaced it with a cheap fill in. I want some cleaner sound and from what I understand, using the same make/model components (although of different sizes) for both front and rear should keep things clean, and produce a more linear sound. I just wasn't sure about the 2-ohm buisenss, that's why I asked. But, if they will heat the amps too much I may have to look for 4-ohm components as the amps get relativley poor airflow. Any suggestions??

yeah I used to have 3 sets of focal 165v2s for my rear fill I paid 400CAD new for each pair (now been upgraded to 165k2p's if you want to spend the mula) but yeah 165v2s are cheap only 400 a pair and sound right amazing, I’m my opinion. with focal I made the alpine rep drewl, (he now runs focal), I'm running for front end Utopia Be N7, and like I said 3 sets of 165k2ps in the rear all powered by Alpine Mrv-F545s, and so far I have not seen anything step to the level of focal around hear. I hope to further upgrade my system as I can afford it, but for 17 I’m doing alright, so yeah go with focal **** what anyone else says, (lol no offence, but that again I’m the guy coming hear for help, so maybe I could be wrong but I don’t think so nor does the alpine rep) or the recording/sound engineer that helped build my system, and if your looking for an amp to push these, I was told PG titanium is just godly, I was a alpine at the time so I ran MRV-F545s

Shawnlh: with that much power on tap, you're going to have to look at the higher end models from a few manufacturers. Time to take a CD (preferably one with a variety of music, very well recorded) out to a few shops and start listening. If you are going to stick with 6.5" coax's up front, the JL ZR line might be a good place to start. I'm assuming your present speakers were installed correctly and you will just pull the old ones and drop in the new set. If you decide to go with a 3 way set up front, the installation abilities of the shop where you get them will be as important as the speakers themselves. Whichever way you decide, spend twice as much time listening as you think you need to, this will save you money and grief in the long run....

Don't forget to keep us all updated on how this turns out, hearing about your experiences and the results will help other people in similar situations...

Those amps are designed to do 4ohm bridged, not 2ohm .... are they not?

Talking

/\ You are correct sir...

Which is why he needs to look at some serious equipment if he plans to stay with his present speaker setup...keep in mind they are 4 channel amps....therefore he has 4 X 4ohm channels to work with, each of which is quite capable of putting out well over 200w into that 4ohm load.

At this point, I'd be thinking about assembling an 8", 5.25" and tweet set for each door...running the component sets off the Orion and the 8"s off the Kicker..... and drop the rear fill completely...you probably won't be able to hear it anyway...

This will also get you close to admission into the 1,000W for Mids and Highs Club which was the subject of another thread here a while ago...

BigRedGuy, now you have me thinking that running 8", 5.25" and tweet set for each door, running the component sets off the Orion, and the 8"s off the Kicker might be a really cool idea. How directional will the 8" be?? My doors are shallow ('93 Dakota ext. cab) and may have to mount the 8" speakers in the rear bottom corner wich will put them on the floor behind the front seats.

Well... , you could try putting a shallow 8" in the door, the 5.25" in the kicks and the tweets either somewhere on the doors or in the 'A' pillar. I'm a big fan of midbass up front so even if you have to build up the front lower corner of the door, it will sound better than having the drivers at the back of the door. If an 8" won't fit, there are several 6" midbass drivers around that would work in a smaller build up. According to Crutchfield, you already have the space for the 5.25" in the door, if you use coaxs there, all you'd need to build is the mount for the 8" or 6"....

More stuff to think about....
