i want to get a sub (who doesnt?)
and im having a hard time deciding what to get, im driving a 2004 lancer sportback (wagon) i dont want it overpowering, i just want some bass, im not planning on amping the speakers anytime soon though
will 1 10" at 250-300w rms be enough? and if it makes a difference, what kind of box should i get considering its a wagon and doesnt have a trunk? would a sealed box be sufficient?

Listen take it from me...(someone that has put way more then he should of into stupid audio).
Buy the BEST sub you can afford if you can wait save more then buy it.
You want to be able to upgrade in the future, And the last thing you need is to have to buy a sub next time around.
So buy the best you can now......Spend extra if you can, then you know you have a good sub and then you know when you get the urge to upgrade you don't need to do the sub.
And don't say you won't want to upgrade, If your just starting out you will find you'll get used to it and ALWAYS want more.
Just my tip because you do not want closets full of ualess audio and you don't want to spend money you don't need too!

Yea, Ray is bang on with this one.. You ALWAYS will want to upgrade, no matter how much you tell yourself you'll be happy, theirs always something you will be like, " Hmm, I bet a nice set of comps would be nice" or lol.. the list goes on....
Denich! I am pretty sure you will be happy with one 12" with around 700-800 watts rms. It may seem like an overkill at first, but trust me, this way you will keep gains at the minimum setting, and the sub will blend nicely with the system. The extra power is when you wanna turn it up loud on the head unit and not get distortion out of the sub, which could be rated around 500-600 watts rms. If you are not planning to have more than one amp, you can even go with class AB 2-channel amp and run it bridged at 4 ohms. High SQ potential.
