Since you are going active, don't bother paying for those passive xovers, you can get only the raw drivers from CDT, seems like the best way to go. PM user name ROSS here. He has great prices on CDT.

And don't worry or put to much concern with getting the best product right now, as just like the rest of us, you will most likely get tired of whatever you choose and want change within the year no matter what you end up with.
Aint that the truth This would be upgrade 3 in less than 6 months. You are so, so correct. Its like any "hobby/ interest"....it gets expensive the more involved you get.

AAAAAA:
I am going to do the install of a lifetime with these . I finally came to the conclusion that its my damn car. If I want to modify the panels, then so be it. Now, can I do great work? Yeah, but probably not nearly as good as some people here. We'll see when everythings done.

SIKK:
Like I said before, I had this impression that Focals were dainty, as in a bit fragile. I dont know why i got that in my head, but I DO want to hear some...at a high volume level.

AAAAAA (again).
I am SO much looking at individual right now. Wouldnt say I could get DOUBLE the quality, but it's close. In fact, I may yank out the CC tonight because some deals I've found are simply spectacular!!

John

Thank you very much for the replies.

The Sikkness you have..... in the last 11 years according to my receipts I have spent $49,812+ cash purchases... ran everything from MA audio, Audiomobile (was the pivotal internet hype company back in 2001) Focal, Rainbow, Planet audio, Dragster audio, Alpine, Eclipse, CLarion, Macintosh, Steg, Arc Audio, Memphis, Brax, Atomic audio,CDT, TRU power and then some.
and after 11 years of running everything in all kinds of configurations I get n any of mine or my wife's cars and Focal always makes me say "wow" From the rediculously meticulous SQ beetle. to the stock location install in the fit tht took me less than 2 hours to do the head unit, amp and front components. I've also visited JM labs on vacaion 2 years ago with the wife. a nice european tour. To see what they put into making and designong each product in their line it's downright impressive.

I sound like I bleed focal blood. but it was a long journey and it's a product tha cannot dissapoint.

What ever happened to the guy, who was happy with MTX etc? I am actually really happy for you, that you're getting into it now with nice upgrades.

That Eclipse 7200MK2 should make you very very happy.

As for having $1200 for your front stage, any above mentioned brand will make you extremely happy. I have very good results with my set-up(thanks to Ross). My buddy has Focal K2P's with great results, and Hybrid Audio is also incredible. My other buddy has DLS, and the sound is also mindblowing, and my other buddy has ES-610 set, which sounds incredible. You can't go wrong with any of these with such a budget.

In passive configurations, Hybrid(Clarus) seems to be treble heavy and midbass goes easily down to 60hz/18db, Focal(K2P) is midrange heavy but is not too happy crossed below 70hz/18db, CDT is also treble happy and ES goes down to 60hz/12hz easily. I need a little more "play" time with DLS. CDT and Hybrid seem to work best out of the box in stock locations with very little tuning.

at that price range, install plays a bigger factor.

In terms of amps, I am a big fan of regulated ones. So choice is very limited, so it is easier for me to make decisions. This leaves me with most Arc amps, Steg K-Series, JL's Slash. Can't think of any other ones right now, but these are my faves. Not too sure if my Zapco C2K 6.0 is regulated. I like full power at low voltage, which helps a lot with big hungry amps, and upgraded alts with lower voltages than factory ones. I have pretty good ears, and could tell at the lights my music did not sound the same with unregulated amps. You hear it mostly on the tweets(lose sparkle), and then bass(gets muddy), surely when quite loud. People may argue for unregulated amps for several reasons, but my ears prefer otherwise. Unregulated amps may be good in perfect electrical environment, which is not the case in a car. I like the way unreged amps sound on the board in a shop though.

That guy heard one too many sets of quality components and realized what a difference they make.

Hey, if I can spend less I will. I'm just an average guy, ex wife, 3 kids, etc, etc.

November is going to be a half decent month for me and 'll have some disposable income. That dollar figure was for a set of components that had really good reviews, power handling, etc., also i figure thats the level where i probably wont hear much difference if I go any higher.

Thanks for your input, I have a good deal of respect for your opinion.

Cheers

John

Best bang for the buck would be getting CDT ES-610 through Ross if they are still on sale. Ask him for details. I can't think of a better sounding passive set out of the box in common locations for the money. If you go active, you may find better options. I would look at sets which have been reviewed to play down to 60hz without any problems. If you go with 3-ways those problems are less common. But if, as you say you have kids and x-wife, 3-ways may get costly with product price and of course the install cost and effort will not be merciful.
