battery question
#23
I guess I'll poke around the threads some more, but since this one is already active ...
I'm just curious for when my battery DOES go in my daily driver, what are the options ...
1 Battery, powering 2 12" subs and an amp ... haven't had any problems thus far, but don't want to begin to have any with the wrong battery.
I'd just like to hear some ideas as to who's running what.

Sasha, I'm curious about your alt. I've been investigating somewhat,
and I see:
100/170 idle / high speed
80 /190 idle / high speed
Of course there is no free lunch and I guess it is dependent on pulley size as well.
To the OP: If you decide to go second battery, you might want to look at a smart solenoid. I THINK (it has many benefits) you can go with different batts, so you would save the cost of replacing the underhood one, just to match it up with the amp one in the back.

Optima blue top is a deep cycle (marine) battery you give up on CCA for AH. you can deeply discharge them is their big advantage, the red top as stated is the starter battery (lots of CCA for those tropical Canadian mornings) and the yellow does both well but not great at either.
70% of you should be happy with a regular high quality wet cell (99% of everyone else), I cant recommend a true deep cycle battery (gel cell/ blue top) for a primary battery especially in the great white north. Read Optimas add copy on proper use of their batteries on their web site is a good source of info too. The red tops are probably fine for your use but I have never heard a yellow top owner say they didn't get the job done. And I must say you should try to match batteries not mix and match types (wet cell vs AGM vs Gel)
I would also explore Powermaster, odyssey, Kinetik and some of the other car audio favs. they do have advantages over wet cell but you really have to need the difference since it will cost you.

Yes, if you're running a trolling motor from the trunk, blue would be for you.
Seriously though, you get what you pay for, but good grief, when you start talking $300.00 to $500.00 for some of those "special" car audio batts, well, its not for me anyway.
I was in Wally Mart picking up erl the other day and saw the yellows. Think I saw a $189.00 tag on them, maybe $209.00.

I went there to see if they could order me a yellow top, but no .! she said someone had already ask for a yellow top and she called and was told they can't get them in Canada ?!?
