You are right, the RMS rating is simply a heat dissipation rating that's not all that accurate anyway. Seems like when you are driving on your long trips, you are overheating them, be it because they are clipped or not. 3 straight hours of boom boom is uncommon in my mind. either way the problem is they are heating up to much. Only fix is to make sure you don't play them as loud.

So if you want louder for a longer period of time, upgrade subs indeed.

Q1
the past is a good indicator of what will hapen in the future, go this route, they will blow again if you keep doing 3 hour drives with them blazing. It's hard to resist turning up the volume. you can't keep trying the same thing and expect different results.

Q2
You have to experiment, quickly run through the subs that interest you, you can usually find the recommended box size easily on the companies web site. find one close to your boxes dimentions then get winisd (free) and put in your potential subs parameters and enter your box parameters to see if you can live with the simulated output.

Q3
Possibly you could connect the good coils back up, but as someone else mentioned you would risk damaging your amp..Your amp does have protective circuitry though so it might not be all that risky. Using only one coil will change the driver parameters, so it might not sound that great anymore in the proted box.

Q4
You can use them as decoration hung on a wall or use them to take up space where you have to much space such as a closet, a garage, a basement or an unused corner.

ohh really.. Ya I never max out my stereo lol. I ever only go like 50-60 full power. Ya that could be your problem right there. putting your subs under so much stress will most definitely kill them, Especially for extended periods of time.

Do what everyone has being saying buy some new stuff that can handle more power. Im thinking you need more much more power and a better sub if you are able to put everything full volume for extended periods of time. you probably need

go for a 12 inch Alpine type x and an Alpine 1000watt amp. Im thinkin that would be your best bet. or find something cheaper that has alot of power!

what I mean is get a set up that you dont have to put full blast to enjoy it. You are going to need a very powerful system.

I think my solution is to buy the new type-r rated for 600wrms and be more conservative for those long rides.

I honestly think its the fact that you listen to the music blasting for 3 hours straight. Woofer needs time to cool down, just like cars do and other mechanical things.

Well, this sub only lasted for ~1.5hr What do you think about the new 600Wrms type-rs? I would expect them to take a longer beating at the same level then previous 500w models.
I think I'll grab an oscilloscope from school and see if the amp is clipping.

A side note, those subs I was talking about in the first post (the 2 12 Rockford Fosgate rated @ 200wrms) survived the trip home but I only ran my system 55-60/80 like I would normally with the windows rolled up on my 3 hour trip. But after the trip the sub magnets were almost too hot to hold on to.

The sub didn't last long - the gains were probably up full, put them between 1/2-3/4, play a test tone and set it until it starts to lose major linearity, it'll sound too-driven. Make sure the subsonic filter is where it's supposed to be and be sure of the port tune (ported?). Subs should be able to play for as long as you want them to on RMS, especially if everything else is set-up right, what's this 3 hours and it's toast stuff? I thought proper product testing procedure was done for days on end, like 3000 hours of a test tone (wobble) @ RMS before it's on the market, and it being Alpine - they have sooo much money, what the hell? Don't buy a better sub unless you're sure about why the other ones failed. What you should do is buy better subs so you can have near the same listening levels when pushed 50-70% of it's maximum. I wanted to keep my gains up because I wanted more bass but it doesn't help, more subs do.
