The number of "ways" in a speaker does not necessarily make them better or worse. In many applications it makes the install that much harder. Keep it simple and go with the 2 ways. I would also add Morel to your list of speakers to consider as well, I prefer them to either of the great speakers you have listed.

I have heard the focal and hertz midrange stuff, in the $300usd range and honestly, I preferred the hertz.
Focal just didnt seem as good, a little hollow almost.

Both are great speakers, and Morel is just as good or better.
You may also want to include dynaudio and dls, as they have some nice offerings in the same price range.

The best way for you to get what you want would be to listen to them.... try to find someone local to you who has the speakers.

ok heres my experience with hertz. When i first got my system i had a pair of esk 165 and were powered by an Alpine MRP-F250 which perfectly matched the rms levels when bridged but i still managed to pop five sets of tweeters in a year which were all covered by warantee and when i blew my fifth pair and because my system was professionally installed hertz gave me a free upgrade to the hsk 165 and have never had a problem with them. Both sets of speakers sounded amazing in my opinion and i paid $200 for the esk's and the hsk's are worth about $450 at my local store. The esk's worked great for about 2 monthes and then one of the components would fry. If you maybe ran a little less power to the esk's they will probably work out beautifully for you but overall i love the Hertz speakers and probably wont switch from them but thats just me. My prices are in canadian so you might be able to get the hsks for within your budget and i would definately recomment them because they are extremely clear, have there own seperate mounting crossover, and look great.

Consider DLS UP6 or UP5. Great speakers. You will not find a bad review.
