My father has extensive experience covering pretty much everything you can think of in Leather. I've talked to him about this before, and his advice is to use a leather-look, stretch vinyl.

I realize you are trying to do something new, and eye catching. So...I'm going to give away an idea that I may be doing myself. The success of it's implementation is in the details.

Wood and Leather (the vinyl stuff)

I've seen this combination used before, and it's absolutely stunning if you get the wood grain and pigmentation right to complement the leather.

To do the wood part, a combination of veneer and solid wood pieces would need to be used to match the complex contours and angles present in a car. Basically, you would use solid wood to form angles or corners, and then run the veneer right against the wood block to cover less contoured areas. It's really hard to match the grains of the wood and the color, but it pays off in fanstastic detailing. The hard part, is that once you lay the wood peices and veneer, humidity becomes an issue. Being in a somewhat tempurate climate, this will be an issue for you. I would recomend getting aged wood and veneer to aviod shrinkage or expansion.
