So I'm not sure if my post should go here or in the Technical side; but I'm hoping to get some help with this head unit. I gutted my 2012 Shaker system and put an all aftermarket system with the DEX-P99RS at the heart of it. I've also installed (4) Polk MM 5x7s in the front and rear; along with the Shelby/Kicker 8" component subs and 2 12" Alpine Type Rs in a Mustang specific sealed enclosure. The speakers are all powered by a JL Audio 6 channel @ 100 W/2 Ohms and a Brutus 1700 W mono block pushing the subs. The big question here is (don't mock me going to Best Buy to have it all installed), but, I think the whole 31 band EQ intimidated the installers and the NW/EQ is all 'flat'. There's no major adjustments to any of the speakers; so, it sounds VERY clear and full of treble. Bottom line is; it's not sounding like a BRAND NEW system should sound. I don't want to go back to Best Buy if I'm going to be sitting there for HOURS while they figure it out. Is running the Auto TA/EQ going to adequate for getting some "depth" and "character" to the system? Or do I really need to get in there and manually tune EVERYTHING? Does someone maybe have a "rock" and "rap" EQ template I could use? Any help would be great!

so many variables in the car that you aren't going to find a truly good template for your car. your specific car has a unique environment with your setup than anyone elses.
the auto-tune is quite good on the unit and will definitely get you a big chunk of the processing done. however, you bought a unit with all of those capabilities, so use them! after using the auto-tune, dial it into your personal tastes. it will take weeks of fiddling probably before you get it perfectly how you like it. |

In the end I spent some time turning off all DSP features (and I mean ALL: flat EQ, no TA, crossovers on "flat", no loudness, etc.). Now I am mostly happy with my sound. I know that TA gives me much better stage, but it makes sound somewhat "unnatural" to me (not sure what exactly this means). I know, I feel kind of silly: paying all these money for unit with all these features, and turning them all off in the end. But I never trusted those DSP's, and I guess I never will. Now I have related question: I'm looking for a head-unit for my other car. I found this JVC "900" series: double-din KW-R900BT, or single-din KD-R900. In specs it says TI/Burr-Brown 24 bit DAC, 5V pre-out. Plays WAV files from USB storage (still no FLAC:( ). To me - this is all I need. If I set everything to "flat" again - do you think sound quality would be on par with p99rs? Anybody had any experience with these units? (priced very reasonable at $200-300). Thanks |
