Well apparently this is the problem, I put in an Exide Orbital deep cycle battery, less than 24 hours later it's down to 8 volts. How should I go about checking what is draining it?

Good choice on getting the battery first. To check the alt, with hte car off put a voltmeter on the battery - it should read in the 12.4-13volt range most likely. Then start the car - the voltage should go to 14+.

Mustangs from that vintage came with horribly undersized alternators in the 65amp range. Check with an auto parts dealer, you may be able to get a 100amp+ alternator for $150 or less that will bolt right on (think Crown Vic cop car with 5.0l). I checked when I first put in the new battery, the alternator was charging it at 14.2 volts. I've already ordered a 130amp 3g alt for the car too. I just have to find what is draining power now.
