Good choice on getting the battery first. To check the alt, with hte car off put a voltmeter on the battery - it should read in the 12.4-13volt range most likely. Then start the car - the voltage should go to 14+.
Mustangs from that vintage came with horribly undersized alternators in the 65amp range. Check with an auto parts dealer, you may be able to get a 100amp+ alternator for $150 or less that will bolt right on (think Crown Vic cop car with 5.0l). Otherwise, check with Loud Brown Kicker Cold guy [img]graemlins/thumb.gif[/img]
