Sure it could be until you find how flexible the Eclipse and the memory stick is. Plug in the calibrated mic, blast the pink noise generator, record your vehicles response onto the stick, upload to home pc and calibrate to your hearts content with far more flexibility than the Pioneer. Download to the stick, upload to the cd player and away you go. This is a powerfull tool for the dedicated die hard enthusiast, once you discover how to use it, it is a tool that you would with other companies would have as well.

Now I have not had a chance to play with the Pioneer at all for the tunability aspect, again though, start clean = end clean. We all have our own opinions and needs though, so choose the one that you think is best suited to your needs.

I was already kind of leaning towards the Eclipse but I noticed there were some things the Pioneer had that "could" be better but wasn't sure and of course no one in town sells both so there was no chance of the sales people being unbiased so I wanted to know why you chose the Eclipse, wasn't trying to argue the Pioneer is better. Too bad you're on the island, I'd buy from you just for the help you've been.

I have the pioneer and over all it makes a darn good player for a daily driver but I think it's way too noisy for comp .

Glad to hear you're not giving biased advice then.

The Eclipse is a fine piece for sure but the 880 is a better unit IMO. Yes the 16-band EQ is very good and much better than the Eclipse. Pioneer is super easy to change on the fly although I don't know why you'd want to make changes while driving anyways.
Auto-EQ function is actually pretty good and great for those listeners that aren't the best at tuning their system. Use the feature and then make slight adjustments for personal taste from there.

Pioneer unit has better tweakability with a better features list to choose from. Definitely one for the SQ guys (and you might just notice I hace a nice Eclipse deck in my car btw but a CD5000 isn't a 8053)

Oh and MR2NR, when you say Pioneer puts more emphasis on looks than function maybe you should actually SEE the deck before you judge it as it's display is as plain as the P9's and it's packed with more SQ goodies than the CD5000.

although mr2nrs opinion does seems horrifically biased towards eclipse, i imagine its profit margin based more than it is reality/quality based, and his statement start clean end clean is pretty laffable, i do see a small bit of reality in what he is saying, the eclipse does offer a far better warranty, the esn feature is ultra cool, the memory stick and auto eq thing is dumb, the parametirc eq is far more sensible than a graphic, 5 volts could be benifical depending on your amplifiers but isnt critical. tuner laid it on pretty thick and for 550 bucks or so the 5000 is a great cd player

How much is the 880PRS? The only place in town that sells it wanted $899 for it when the Pioneer website says the suggested price is only $699. Typically retailers sell things for less than MSRP not $200 more. Ah well, he won't get my business ever.

SQ wise I have no problem with either model, but you guys have to be joking about eclipse having a clean look. My biggest problem with Eclipse over the last 10 years is the fugly face plates. The Pioneer is much cleaner looking. At least in my opinion.

I'd pick the Pioneer.....if this were the 80's. IMO pioneer sucked after the 80's.....even the P1 and P9's aren't great decks.

They are SOOOO confusing, too many menu's that are too hard to use and hard to find. Not to mention I really lost ALL respect for them when they put those dolphins in the decks. that was really cheap looking.

why not get a new Alpine deck? not AS hard to navigate through, and they sound as good or better than the Eclipse.

Also, 699 is a US price.

Actually from a business standpoint, the Pioneer is a more profitable line there thekid. If you would like the speculate about business, please put your money where your mouth is. Please by all means, if you guys who are the naysayers have both lines available to you, then make your comments. Seeing as both of you probably do not own (a guess) and will never own both at the same time, let alone be able to use both at the same time, are your comments not a little biased as well? Based on what you like? Perhaps I will stock this Pioneer cd player and put it into my comparison display. I know who will win and it is easy for me to stand behind what I beleive. IF it comes out drastically different, then great, I have another good cd player to recommend.

Tical, you are more than likely looking at the US retail pricing and that price you posted would also show proof that the Pioneer line would be more profitable as well. I am sure that the Eclipse model is cheaper than the Pioneer model in the two stores that you have seen them at. FYI, the Eclipse has a higher dealer cost than the Pioneer by a long shot.

Oh, almost forgot.....you consider yourself an audiophile, but you wanna use that little T/A mic thingy like the H900 has.....but you'll only sound good from your seat....a true SQ car sounds good from both seats.

Long and equal pathlengths are key to a good soundstage not time alignment.
