Unhappy Energy Components - a lost cause?

I had Energy 6.5 Components in my car. I never could seem to get much midbass out of them. My HU is a Kenwood Excelon and the speakers were powered by a Alpine MRP F- 300

My doors are damped but do have two large holes in them as shown here.

The speaker is mounted on a 5/8" thick plastic plate.

I also found the tweeters excessively bright even with the -6db setting on the crossovers.tweeters are mounted just under the sail panel, on the top part of the door, pointing towards the drivers seat.

Anyone here use the same speakers - what were your impressions? What settings did you use for the HPF? Should I seal the two holes and give the Energys another shot?

i dont have much midbass either.. my tweets are aimed the the middle dome lightin the A panel away from the window. its still just a tad bright but depends on the type of music and the quality they sounds really good to me but theres got to be something we can do with that tweet lol

btw block those holes with sheet metal

ohhh and im runing these with 110watts rms HP at 80hz. +3db at 80hz on the deck... a sub does help them tho

Thumbs up

You definitely need to seal up the doors. If you go to a housewares store or even Dollarama get a couple of plastic cutting board sheets. Look for ones made of 1/8th" thick plastic, should be $2 or so. Screw them to the door skin and cover them with deadener to seal them up.

Until you install those comps properly you will never know how good they can sound.

^ I agree.

From what I have seen and heard though, while I like the sound of the Energys, they are light on the midbass.

You need to get them holes covered bro, that alone will make a huge improvement on midbass.

make some templates of the openings and cut them out of 1/4 inch abs plastic screw them down to the door with caulking as a gasket and then cover them with sound deadener. Where wires and cables run through, just drill a hole for it and cut a slit to slide them in place , and then caulk it. Once that's done, then you can tell if the components are worthy. I thought my mids were weak prior to doing this as well, but now they sound like 8's in the doors.

I know my doors could be much better. But, theres so little info on the Energy's that I wonder how good they can sound. most feedback i've seen indicates they are weak in the midbass performance.

FWIW I presently have JBL's 6x9's in the doors. They sound much fuller but the Energy's had a better sound stage. Could I use the tweeters and crossover from the Energy's and use the JBL as the woofer.

For the most part, when it comes to midbass, any decent 6x9 will provide more than a decent 6.5. There's simply more cone area.

Yes you can try that out. The tweeters on the JBLs will make little to no sound though.

I might give it a try just to see how it'll sound. Not too worried about not using the JBL's tweeters they're pretty average sounding anyways.

I decided to fix the doors and retry the Energy speakers. It was a lot of work, especially because the sheetmetal (for the hole under the speaker) had to be curved inwards to fit the door panel. I used aluminum sheets, screws and sealed it up with silicon.

I did a bit neater job on the drivers side. The blue stuff on the door is Blueskin.

The results were better than expected, the midbass improved greatly. All in all, the speakers sound pretty darn good now . Only real negative is the tweeters are just too bright . They can be improved with some EQing but they're still OK at best. Perhaps my tweeter location exacerbates the problem . Does anyone know if wiring the tweeters out of phase would help?

All in all though I would recommend these speakers. For what they're being cleared out at FutureShop ($90 in my area) they are a bargain.
