why? aside from a little nicer smell, you're not going to gain anything, but a bigger bill for the resin.

ahhhh.......no, not if you want the quality stuff. I use West Systems resin/hardener - it is popular with boat builders. I pick it up at a store that caters to boat builders, and apparently I was the first to purchase there for speaker enclosures. Check out the West Systems website.

The toxic styrene fumes is a starting point.... the next major factor is that epoxy is significantly stronger...

epoxy also has superior characteristics as far as adhesion to other surfaces, durablity, shrinkage, resistance to chemical attack...... and probably a few others... (although some of those may not apply in car audio..)


it is definatly more expensive though....

 

^ For using it in a structural application like for a tirewell tub or something like that, epoxy could be a better bet. If using for anything cosmetic where you might want to use a Bondo-type product, which are pretty much always polyester-based, using the epoxy resin underneath could cause problems you don't want to have. That link to a detailed article on fixing rust with fiberglas in the donut shop goes into that issue.

 

yup... you need to get special for finishing.... some places that sell the stuff also sell powdered fillers you can mix in for this purpose....

For sure it's stronger, as it's used in carbon, and kevlar fabrication, but the added strength isn't that big of a deal, considering the cost of the epoxy resin, or doing another layer of glass... but I do agree it's stronger...
