epoxy also has superior characteristics as far as adhesion to other surfaces, durablity, shrinkage, resistance to chemical attack...... and probably a few others... (although some of those may not apply in car audio..)
it is definatly more expensive though....
^ For using it in a structural application like for a tirewell tub or something like that, epoxy could be a better bet. If using for anything cosmetic where you might want to use a Bondo-type product, which are pretty much always polyester-based, using the epoxy resin underneath could cause problems you don't want to have.
