General question regarding clipping

I have a 300 watt amp and my sub is rated at 600 watts. Today I just set my amps gain with a multimeter to keep my sub from clipping. So when I finished my gain was only turned up maybe only a quarter of the way. Could I turn it up more without blowing my sub? Since it is a 300 watt amp and the sub is rated at 600 watts

I am not an expert on this, but my understanding is that it is not power that blows subs, it is distortion. If you have gains set up to the point of clipping (and I am assuming you backed them down a little at that point), then I would keep the gains where they are. If you go past the point of clipping, you run the very dangerous chance of blowing your sub. But, like I said, I am no expert on this. I just would not do turn up the gains. If you have to, get a more powerful amp.
