That is a huge amp for that sub. Looks like it is 300w rms and dual 4 ohm, correct? Waaaay too much power if that is the case by the looks of it and that much power on a continual basis is going to fry a sub if it cannot dissipate the heat generated. While you can wire the sub in series to 8 ohm and then turn the gain down to be as safe as possible, a more suitable amp is going to be the ideal way to go.

the coil can handle that much power easily but the suspension
does have it's limits....I wouldn't go over 400w rms with the Dcon
the Icon would be a good match for that amp though

There are literally tons of options for you all dependent upon your budget. Once that is known then some options can be chosen. Do you ever plan on adding a second identical sub? If the answer is maybe or yes, then we need to choose an amp that can handle that as well.

I was looking at the amp that would come with 2 10" dcons on the ssa website. would that suffice for 1 sub? also would it be cheaper to just keep my current clarion amp and get say the icon 10"? I can spend anywhere from 300-500

Still lots of options. There is a deal on the Eclipse XA2000 amp, it is a class D amp that makes 400w rms into 4 ohm and would power up a pair of the subs but not to their full potential. It is a match to the Sundown for power output but a step up in amp. This amp is on sale for $329.99 right now. A larger two channel amp would be a good match as well for this IF you are going to go for 2 subwoofers.

For more power, a class D amp that makes more power into 1 ohm would probably be the ideal way for you to go. It can power 1 sub right now and 2 if you so choose to add another one. I have lots to choose from here and $ wise on the low side of $280 to the high side over $800.00

well the choice is basically stay with the clarion dpx1000.1 and get the 10" ssa icon, or get the 10" ssa dcon and get the eclipse amp. It would probably be cheaper for me to get the ICON sub instead of downgrading to a smaller sub and amp.

I've decided on getting either the 10" or 12" ICON. Should I just get the box that they build for it? or get someone to make a box for it?
