Usually the sub box that they build for it is specific to its needs and design. I would have to agree with ip.

one other question, the ICON is rated at 1000w RMS and my Clarion DPX1001.1 amp is a 1000w peak. Is that going to be a problem?

No if you are careful with the gain and bass boost.

Think upgrading your amp also in the near future to get the max out of this monster.

what exactly do you mean "be careful". as in don't have it up too high? or low?

I'm not too sure on the details of gain but I know it is similar to volume, like the initial volume of the amp, so keeping it down is what you would want to do. Bass boost would boost the low end so I think that would be kept down too. However isn't it a contradiction that you have to be careful with the clarion levels yet you should upgrade to get the most out of the sub? Maybe he means a higher quality?

I'm not sure either. Basically the issue is either getting the icon and sticking with my amp (hopefully it sounds good) or getting the dcon and buying a new amp for it.

What I meant by be careful is make you sure the amp never clip. When the amp clip it generate a square wave instead of a sinusoid one, this square wave is like "DC" and will prevent the sub to cool down and the result will be that you will blow the coils because they overheated.

Look for some thread that explain how to adjust the gain with a DMM.

I was checking out the ssa store and they had this combo

SSA Icon 10D2 + Sundown SAZ-1000D Combo

Now the amp seems to be around the same specs as my clarion dpx1001.1, so couldn't I still use my clarion? just because people were saying to get a more powerful amp that could handle the sub a bit better. Why would they pair it with an amp that can't give the sub what it needs? Or is it just that the sundown amp is better than the clarion. Or would there be an amp similiar to the sundown that I could get? I just want to finally decide on an amp/sub combo lol so eager to get one!

Sorry, one other thing. I listen to a huge variety of music and debating between a 10 or 12 inch. What would you guys recommend for me. I listen to anyting from, world-hiphop-rap-classic rock-metal-classical-blues-jazz-hard rock, etc..

A gain control is used to match voltage levels between your deck and your amp. All amps require a certain voltage at the input RCAs to drive the outputs to their maximum undistorted level. The gain control raises or lowers that voltage to compensate for decks with lower output levels. Setting the level is critical to good sound, too low and the amp will never put out all the power it is capable of, too high and you will drive the amp into distortion every time you turn it up......

The Clarion will work fine with his speaker......setting the gain as low as possible (which means setting it to the highest voltage level possible ) will work for now. As long as he is careful with the volume control so the speaker is not driven past it's limits it will be fine. The catch is you have to listen carefully to the sub when you turn it up, if you hear it distorting turn it down a bit....

Should I just get the Sundown SAZ-1000D amp as it would power my sub a lot better since it is 1000w rms and my clarion is only 1000w peak?
