Grr... terrible day
I dont think not having an alarm gives people the right to steal your stuff. I have had my stereo stolen more times then I would like to rember. But then again an alarm wont really help much either. At least not if the theives really want whats in your car. My personal alarm uses as many back up systems as I could think of as well as a 2 way pager. But all it protects me against is the hacks.
My suggestions:
Get a alarm.
have it installed properly.
if you can, add backup systems to the alarm.
Dont park in the carpooling area ever again.

That's just it... I will get an alarm, but I don't think it would have helped. I'm at a Park & Ride that really doesn't see very many people around it between 9am and 4pm.
During that time a thief could sit there all day figuring out my alarm.

I feel your pain dude. A friend of mine is an adjuster for an insurance company. Let me tell you its well known by all insurance companies in the area, the Ottawa Police, OC Transpo and a few lucky victims like you that......
Park and Rides are basically a free buffet for car theft and break-in's. Basically it happens every day in one or more location. Theives know most of the cars will sit unattended and the lot is dead between 10-2.
As for police patrols they don't give a rats a##. Remember how long it took them to take action this past summer when girls were getting molested and guys were getting robbed by "gangs" at Hunt Club Station ? The police reponse was to have a patrol car drive by 2x a night to "spot trouble". Personal safety is higher on their priority than protecting property so you know how much attention theft is going to get.
An alarm will not have helped you in this instance. If a tree falls in the forest.... I'd also be carefull about getting a new system if you're going to park there. They very well may be watching you car in the next month or two.... the time it takes for that big fat insurance claim to come in and new gear to be installed in your car.
Just curious. Who is this installer that you speak of ?

i know just how you feel. my car has been broken into twice at park-n-rides. first time they got everything, my first system. second time they just broke the window and took the loose stuff in the back seat. but it's the feeling of not being safe that really gets to you. if they can hit a car in broad daylight then what is this world coming too? My insurance never went up when I claimed my stolen gear... I asked my insurance about that causing it to go up and she said not because it's not like it's your fault directly or something...you can get up to 1500$ back sub the deductible... could get a couple pretty nice things anyway.
^^your fault or not these days insuracne companies tend to take the stance that if you have multiple claims your 'high risk' and therefore your rates go up. You may not have a problem the first or second time....but after that watch out!
Did they go over your car to see if everything was properly secured?
Or did they just take your word for it?

Sorry to hear about the loss - I've been there too so I know what you mean by "share the pain".
Try and think positively. Back in 1989 when my stuff got stolen, the insurance money allowed me to start from a "clean slate" and update my equipment - I still have one of the Alpine 3401 EQs from that claim!

I know a number of people have said that an alarm won't help if someone really wants your stuff, but at the very least it is a deterrent (especially against hacks), and if you invest in a good alarm with a back-up battery at least you will get some peace-of-mind. I definitly factored-in a good quality alarm (CompuSTAR 2-way) as part of my budget when I outfitted the audio in my Jeep. I also documented my audio gear and took a few digital pictures for insurance purposes, just in case.
