420 guy ran a Hifonics amp to his Clarion subs and competed successfully for a number of years.

I had a Brutus bx 1205d for 4 years running at 1 ohm for about 3 hours a day summer and winter with absolutely no problem. If i needed a reasonably priced amp, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. As far as SQ, can't say I noticed a difference between it and any other brand (RF, Audison, Zapco, US amps, Crossfire to name a few) I ran in similar set ups...bass was tight and clean (sub SQ has more to do with enclosure design, driver choice, and source material than anything else). Anyway, my 2 cents, everyone will have their own opinion based on their experiences. One note though, newer Hifonics in the lower to midrange line tend to be a little optimistic with the ratings (power output is lower than spec in most cases...but not by a lot). This isn't a really big issue as it translates to probably less than 1 dB in output for typical daily driven systems.
