Yeah, I checked out the Hertz already! They have good power handling as well so you can push them pretty good. You're giving them about 5% of the power they need so you can expect a huge improvement once you amp them. You will quickly understand why you don't want/need rearfill, especially powered by the deck, once you give those comps 100wrms per side!

Rearfill in a 2 door car? Really, if after you power those comps in the front you still feel like you want rearfill for whatever reason, 6.5" are not only my fav mid-range speaker, but also my fav mid-bass speaker, and this would be an option which you could consider (besides going with none at all, but these are your only options).

Get a 4-channel amp as those comps are 4-ohm and buying a 2-channel will not be a good match. Bridge the 4-channel so it gives you all its power at 4ohm. Leave the factory rearfill disconnected. Powering them with the deck will only distort your overall sound and powering them with the amp will only take power away from the comps (don't feel like you're wasting anything, you can always try it if you need convincing).

Let us know how it all goes and what you ultimately end up with.

well i installed my comps the other day,i didnt disconnect the rear speaks yet but i set the fader all the way to the front on my deck...the hertz speakers are kick ***,they have amazing highs and pretty damn good mid bass.i was just wondering though,i am running them off my deck which is 22rms x 4,and they distort when i turn them up pretty high at about 26 volume on my deck, how is this happening if they are 100rms and im only giving them 22rms??do i really need to amp them, wont that just be too much power?...other than that they sound great.

You are out of gas is what it comes to. The tiny little amp in the cd player has given all it can and now it is producing distortion that the speakers are reproducing. Yes, you need a amplifier.

MR2 already answered properly, but just to add something.

Yes, your deck may be rated at 22wrms per channel, but it is highly unlikely it can put out this kind of clean power. To give you an example, I had my Clarion $1000 head unit tested, to prove a point (similar to what I am doing now). It was rated at 4x40wrms and some ridiculous peak number. Anyhow, it was putting out a continuous 6wrms and not a bit more.

A few watts is enough for a speaker to get very loud, it can even hurt your ears, but for clean loud and enjoyable sound you need an amp.

As I said, you will wonder how you ever lived without an amp once you hear your comps with proper power. Don't buy lowend, its much better to buy 50wrmsx4 high quality then 200wrmsx4 of crap (the latter will probably be cheaper even tho it says its 4x the power, lol).

Enjoy, let us know.

the deck clipping constantly will also blow your speakers, which would suck! did you do any sound deadening to your doors?? i just completed the component install on my 2000 accored, and i dynamatted the inside and the outside door skin, what a difference!!my subs are not installed yet and i am getting unbelievable bass response out of kenwood...yes kenwood excelon components, its a 7 inch midbass and people dont believe i dont have a sub installed yet.

I think I read somewhere that with audio equipment (be it home or car) that once you hit 70% of the volume, it starts producing distortion.

Anyone want to confirm or refute that?

There is distortion present at pretty much all times, as correctly pointed out though, is it audable? 70% = distortion = incorrectly set gains or headunit that is clipping all over the map. Seems more of a use of the system or incorrectly matched equipment to me.

I would think its audible distortion.

For example, my home theatre at home. 5 channel, 100 watt per channel. The volume **** goes from 0 - 100. By the time I get around 65 - 70 on the dial, it starts to sound like crap.

Now, whether or not its because of:

a) the speakers
b) my ears not liking it
or
c) the 70% rule

I do not know.

However, it does lend some weight to what I think I may have read.
