infinity 1230 sub quality?

Put one of these in my friends explorer today. Unfortunately he went with the sealed box off of about 380wrms. Sounds alright. Leaves a little to be desired. I think the ported box would have solved that, but it was his decision.
Cant go wrong with those subs though for the price.

the 2 infinity would blow the w3 away. (its a lot easier to increase spl with 2 woofers than reaming 1 of them/ 2 is generally louder.[---generally---]) My brother-in-law has one on about 700 watts rms in a spec ported box. it sounds great and gets pretty loud. don't do a sealed...especially with that much power... they bottom out pretty easy. I would say 2 of them with about 800-1000 watts on them in a spec ported enclosure would give you the sound quality that you wanna hear everyday and still have pretty decent spl, unless you like it really loud. If thats the case then might wanna get something else.

ok...2 new questions...
on the infinity website, it says for mounting depth: 6-7/16"
what is the 6-7?? im guessing that the box should be 16" deep, but what does the 6-7 mean?
also, the independace for the 1230's is 4 ohms...so if im buying an amp that gives a different power rating for 4 ohms compared to 2 ohms, do i need to buy an amp thats 600 watts rms at 4 ohms?? how does that work? can someone explain the ohm business to me a little better?

LOL the mounting depth is six and seven sixteenths inches deep.
If the 1230's are single 4 ohm and you're running two of them, you would wire them in parallel to get a 2 ohm load. When looking for an amp, I'm going to presume a monoblock, look for what power it puts out with a 2 ohm load.

Mounting depth is the measurement from the back of the magnet to the mounting flange of the speaker. It's how 'deep' the sub is.
Look up the subs brand website. They usually give recommended box sizes for their subs. They may give the sizes in volume (cubic feet). You have to figure out the dimensions so it will fit your install, and give the proper volume.
