- Pioneer (p-600 I think)
Really old deck.. honestly.. excellent deck, nice options and I would definitly throw that deck into a secondary vehicle if I hadn't of sold it. I don't really have anything bad to say about that apart from the fact that it was plain looking and didn't really have any nice graphics.

- Kenwood eXelon. don't even remember the model number off the top of my head..x859 I think.. I only used it about a year before I sold it.. it had better sound quality than the pioneer, looks weren't much better, but I found it a bit more difficult to use the options while driving.

- Now I am on the eclipse 8443.. even better sound quality, looks still aren't great, but I like the options.

There are two or three other decks I am familiar with that my best friend has owned as well.. since I spent a fair amount of time in his car too.

- Sony Xplod - garbage deck.. he said it, i said it.. the only reason why he bought it was the price. It practically blew up, stopped playing cd's etc.. he had a hell of a time with it. The options were okay, sound was okay etc.. just didn't seem very reliable at all.

- Panasonic - I don't have any idea what the model number was since he owned this ages ago..but it was okay... looks were okay.. options were not stellar, but it was okay.

- Alpine (not sure what model number).. he bought it a couple of years ago.. $300-400 dollar range.. I think it's a pretty good deck... looks/sound/options/reliability. setback... maybe too many buttons/hard to learn/remember everything? And honestly, I don't think them alpine decks really look that great.

Problems summarized:

pioneer - p600 - no problems
kenwood exelon x859 - It skipped once the db levels got fairly high
Eclipse 8443 - No problems except when the deck boots up it has a factory defect.. it makes a "boom" or "pop"ing noise in the subs. Other than that, no problems.

Problems with friends deck summarized:

Panasonic - I think it just died on him
Sony Xplod - it did what it said it would do.. xplod and fall apart on him.. nothing but problems... I think it was mostly discs not being recognized.. For some reason I recall him having other problems as well, but I can't exactly remember right now.. i'd have to ask him about it. Basically what happened was.. he had major problems with the deck within the first year of owning it... had to send it in to get fixed.. when he got it back.. it worked okay.. but then the cd player was very selective at recognizing cd's... just a headache all around.
Alpine - no problems from what I am aware of

But do a bit more research, don't let people decided what you would like to try, just start reading find something that interests you and then come ask.
