Question

Who here has had any experience with 12v computers? I've had a few inquiries lately from my clients and right now the only lead i've got is GNET. i'm going to tie this in with the video systems i've already put in their vehicles, i just need to know how reliable they are and if anyone on the board knows of any other brands i can check out.

The Xbox is a hugely untapped reasource in the interest of putting a computer in a car. Once the factory bios is surpassed the Xbox is basically a computer and the 4 controler slots in the front can be configured to be USB slots.

The Xbox only consumes about 100 watts of power and only needs an inverted power signal to run.

Right now my Xbox has a 16X read DVD rom with a 80 gig hard drive. It has a media player, notepad and a number of helpful utilities on it. I don't think that mature customers would be too keen on having a hacked up video game system in their car but for the consumer on a budget it can't be beat.

You can also run Linux on the xbox!

Run a wireless ethernet adapter for transfer of files between house and car. Make convertion plugs to run USB devices through the controller inputs. Run RCA audio/video. Toslink optical audio. S-video too!

The Xbox is idealy perfect for a carputer.

I just finished isntalling a computer in my truck this past weekend. It's not all tidied up yet, but most things are functional.

It uses a Via mini-itx motherboard (small) and has an 80GB hdd, 16x dvd rom, wireless network adaptor, radio adaptor, and i have a 10" touch screen LCD. Everything is working great right now and I'm really happy the way things turned out

www.mp3car.com is the resource I use most.
