multiple 8"s V.S. single 10"

Hi everyone I am currently driving a wagon and run into a bit of a snag. I love my music and my bass buuut I need to keep 99.9% of my cargo area open and free for use (hauling everything from 2x4s to our dogs lol). So I'm wondering would 2 decent 8"s in the side panels sound close enough to say a single alpine type S 10" for your average music lover who just wants to really hear his music(and maybe slightly feel it)?
I know its a tough question but I can't seem to find much in my searches so any advise is apreciated.

depends on how the 8's are installed...if they're in proper enclosures, then yes, as 2 8's have more surface area and can handle more power than a single 10...all else being equal. if they're just mounted in the side panels, then no.

ya I wouldn't just put them in the panels. I would put them in small sealed enclosures. Now knowing that two 8"s will perform very similarly to a single 10" are there any all around decent 8"s out there for a decent price? I know that the Kicker CVrs sounded decent to me in my friends regular cab truck and the prices weren't toooo bad. Not sure how it would be in a wagon though haha. So anyone else have some suggestions of what may be some good buys/shops in and around the Northumberland Ontario area that I could hear them at?
Thanks again for the help.

Ok I think I've found my reasonable 8"s I'm looking at the JBL GTO804s. Does anyone have experience with these?

The problem with subwoofers, is that they love being in big ported enclosures. That being said, you are not likely to get the performance you want from a small sealed box. Hows your patience? Maybe its time to try a little FG.

I'm running a pair of RE re8's on 400 watts in the gf's car, though not in anything small or sealed. I tried them on the same power in a small sealed box and was not impressed.

What are you listening to?

2 sealed 8's won't be good for low bass, as they roll off quick (50-70 Hz/start). If you listen to rap and want a low response from a small box than look at the Eclipse SW-series 10's, in about 1.25 cubes sealed they don't roll off until < 30 Hz and they stay flat on down (QTC .5), 750W RMS and about $200. I figure you'd use around .625 NET for each 8 anyways.

obviously you're aware of your limitations and that of the set up you're interested in, so I imagine you're not interested in gobs of bass to impress the guy next to you at the lights. With that said, the 8's in sealed enclosures will deliver nice sounding bass with good impact and certainly enough to give you good sound. Will it play 20hz tones loud enough to shake your car..not likely, but it'll sound like a good pair or headphones. It all depends on what you want. Two of those jbl 8's will sound at least as loud as a single 10" type s in similar sealed boxes.

Im doing the same, just be aware you will probably need a shallow 8" sub, as most wagons dont have a lot of space behind the interior panels. I am looking for an 8" sub that can take 500rms at 2ohm and be less than 4" mounting depth, having a hard time finding one.

^^no one makes a shallow 8" that can handle that power...it's hard enough to find an 8 that handles over 300 watts rms. However, if you can manage 6" of depth and a lot of room behind the sub for the humongous magnet...the tc sounds epic 8 at partsexpress may be the ticket.

Edit: Just noticed at woofersetc.. That alpine has new type r 8" that's only 4.25" depth...and handles 350 watts rms...definitely worth looking at...strange it's not listed on the alpine site though.

Ya I think the deepest section I've got might be around 5". I mostly listen to rock. stuff like disturbed, godsmack, ZZTop, AC/DC, etc etc. Everynow and again I do enjoy cranking the bass up but I know if I want to keep the functinality of my hatch I'm really limiting myself.
The only way I could see to get like a 10 in would be to possibly make a subfloor for the hatch area that can act as a enclosure and be able to turn that sub off and cover it up when I'm hauling stuff.
