multiple 8"s V.S. single 10"

They are up in the side panels. Wish GM would have made the grills removable but as far as I can see I'm taking the entire trim panel from the hatch right to the rear door off as one piece haha. Either way It would be awsome to find the resistance of the subs and the power output of the stock amp to see if maybe swaping them out would be doable. I mean the stock subs sound ok down to say a deep male voice but they can't get anything beyond that to sound really good.

Your fronts could be high passed out of the deck or factory amp. You can tie into the sub leads to get a strictly low frequency high level input.
What kind of enclosure are the stock"subs" in. CDT Audio has a couple different 6x9" subs that handle up to 200 RMS. I believe they're designed for more "infinite baffle" type applications, but just thought I'd throw it out there as an option.

I am sure you can find more info on them on the net. Once you find out the depth you have available and what it looks like, then you can try and find a suitable replacement either in the same 6x9 format or as an 8 or 10 inch sub depending on the room.
Forget using the stock amp though, You will need a real amp.
I would start by trying that route first and see if you end up being happy with the output and if not then you can try something different. Personally I think you could make it work.

Well I got the genius idea of looking through the area were the jack is housed and I can see the "sub" it looks like your typical 6x9 and is mounted using a plasticsurround that almost looks like one of those "bass boomer" things crappy tire sells. The plastic is just mounted to the flat sheet metal.
But this is def a project that's going to have to be a nice warm day haha because I can also see that the rear interior panel is all one piece so to get at the wiring and speakers I will definatly have to strip the rear section to nothing.
So now thanks to all of your help I have a rough Idea of what I'm probley going to be going for but I have one last big question for you all.
Do I need to chop out teh stock amp or can I use a line out on the stock "sub" speaker leads to add a amp to power the aftermarket subs? Why I ask is I really do like the way the front sounds. It is very clear and crisp and if it can be helped I'd like to leave that as is and simply upgrade the rears. Thanks again to everyone for thier massive amounts of help.

Def wait til a warm day or at least warm up the interior of your van first. Cold plastic is brittle. I'd say try some good 6x9s or subs in those boxes before you modify anything. Make sure they're mounted solidly and the boxes and surrounding metal are deadened.
I want to do a pair of CDTs carbon fiber subs in my front stage so you could tell me how they work. Lol. If you go that route anyway.
You could use the stock sub wires as high inputs into an aftermarket amp or a hi/low convertor.
Let us know what you decide

If you can fit them, these are worth taking a look at..6x9 bass drivers:

Hmm those 6x9 subs look really intresting. I'm thinking building small proper enclosures in the stock location is looking really good. I will keep everyone updated for sure on whats going on. Now if it would warm up to even 15 or so and sunny I could tear into it and see what space I really have to work with haha
