Need Sub Selection Help

Hey Guys,

I just signed up for this forum and there seems to be a ton of knowledgable people here! I hope to be able to contribute later on as I learn more...but until that point i'm going to have to ask some questions and I hope you guys can help me out!

My first question lies in subwoofer selection. I listen to rock music (classic) mainly but like to think I listen to a bit of everything. I'm looking to upgrade my current system with a subwoofer as my current setup has NO base at all...it's kinda sad. I don't really want to turn heads or blow out my ear drums, just add what is "missing" to my music and maybe be able to enjoy some hip-hop now and then if I feel like it.

my current setup:
Alpine CDA-9830 motorized CDA/MP3/WMA player
Kaption audio 100watt 3.5" 2-way coaxials in the front
Kaption audio 160watt 5.25" 2-way coaxials in the rear

my origonal search for a sub had to be a "low profile" sub to fit in a tight place. after going to a few stores I found this sub

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10072865&catid=1105 1&logon=&langid=EN&test%5Fcookie=1

This thing sounded absaloutley perfect to me! not too loud, but loud enough. it was in sealed box and did not sound like constant bass (I hate that) and was very tight and responsive. The most important thing to be is the bass being very "clean"....not hitting for too long or two late...must be a sealed box for me. for those that can't see the link, it is a 1000watt, 250watt RMS sub made by pioneer, low profile.

I have now changed my mind for a sub box and depth of the sub is no longer an issue and would like to hear advice on another quality sub that would give me the same results as I said above. I was thinking maybe a 200watt RMS JL sub with a mono channel amp for now...later getting a 4 channel for the speakrs. Basically I wanted some advice for a "mild" sub that won't drown out my rock music and is very "tight". can you more experienced people recommend something for me?

Thanks very much,
Steve

alpine make a sub in a box with amp combo.

we can make tonnes of recomendations. But its a lot easier to pick one out if your at the store.

P.S. Stay away from Future shop, most of the sales people don't know s. There are some car audo shops in oshawa and whitby.

I have a 10W3D2 (250RMS) JL sub and it rocks. Its in a ported box but the bass is clean and gives a nice thump. Would definitly recommend it.

JL=quality

Cmon tire shreddar............Stick with the Kaption man.......a single Kaption CL series 10 would be more than perfect for you, trust me. Very efficient, so it will work well off of the wattage ur feeding it and has VERY nice sound

Image Dynamics IDQ would be my choice from a number of great choices.
Performance is fantastic in a small enclosure and it doesn't require a ton of power nor will it break the bank.

Good luck on your decision from a fellow 'Shwa member.

thanks guys!

sorry for the slow reply, have not been able to get to my PC. I am fairly happy with my kaptions speakers, I get a decent amount of distortion whne I turn it up but I think that maybe be because I don't have an amplifier powering them. THe speaker size over all is very small so it's lacking some serious low end sound. This sub install is a must for me, Kaption sure does have some appealing specs and it's great to hear some people with actual experience with them! When I was origonally shopping for speakers it came down to kaption and alpine for sound quality (spent a day going to various stereo places). to me, it sounded like the kaptions were not as "metallic" sounding as the alpines, so I went with them...turned out to be cheaper too!
