Give me a chance to see who we use for our alternator rebuildig services and I will post the info. Maybe they will do small car ones as well. I'm planing on doing mine as well.
What you want is your alternator REWOUND to produce a higher output. I am not familiar with BMW alts, but many alternators also have built in voltage regulators and possibly other electronics which can make them expensive to replace.
$1500.00 sounds expensive, I was quoted around $500.00 from the dealership, BUT I drive a Ford and you drive a BMW .

try a company called SVA Power Products 1-888-214-7774, good guys with a great product, should be able to help u out, 1500 sounds a little steep, these guys also re-wind alternators i belive, good prices too.
if not them, call up any of the other alternator places, ohio generators, powermaster, or like codtripwire suggested, yellow pages for alt re-building or something along those lines and gte ur factory one re-wound...a lot of shops blow things out of proportion if they dont know what there talking about or dont know what there doing...just what ive found in my travels...good luck
