My friend want to sell his jl w3v2 12" sub, but he doesn't want to sell it to me because he said he is afraid the sub will blow since he was running it at 450-500rms. I told him 450-500 is not that bad for w3v2. I guess my question is was he over powering it. Also I have an alpine MRV-t502, its an old school amp that puts about 300rms at 4ohm. is that good enough to power the sub if I buy it from him, or am I going to need a new amp? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. thx
By the way, he was running his w3 on tantrum 500.2

Well by all rights according to JL specs. that sub is recommended to handle 300wrms. It could most likely handle 400wrms all day long. But if he was feeding it that much power all the time and if he owned it for quite a while I would say he probably beat on it......i would stay clear of it as well. But if your heart is set on it just measure the VC's with an ohm meter, check for rips and/or tears on the surround, cone and spider. And to anwser your question about the Alpine amp. That amp would be a nice match if the JL sub your thinking about has dual 2 ohm voice coils otherwise you will either load down the amp to much or will not use the amp to its full potential depended on how you wire the sub.

Hope this helps you.
