New To Car Audio (help)

Hey guys im new to car audio...

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but it seemed the best spot to put it.


I have two 12" JL W3's with a Alpine 400w RMSx1 amp and no wireing as of yet.

I forund a used capacitor for sale but i know nothing about them so i come here seeking help.

its a Phenoix Gold 1.0 Farad capacitor, led voltage display on top and mounting brackets for 100 bucks can u guys help me out? Do i need it? Should i get it or is this guy trying to rip me off..

dont bother with the cap, use the money to buy your wiring and upgrade your cars stock wiring, alt to battery, battery to chassis, engine to chassis.

A cap is not worth the money. Esp. for 400watts of power. I'm sure you would be fine with out it. Yes they discharge fast but they must also recharge so in the end its usless. Like posted above your better to do the Big 3 wire upgrade. Before you ask whgat that is, just use the search option on this site for Big 3.

Also if you do choose to go ahead with it anyway here is a rule of thumb.

0.5farad is good for around 500 watts.
1.0farad is good for around 1000watts.

Also if its used a $100 is a rip off.

Thanks alot guys ill deffinatly take that into perspective... Ill search for that 3 stage wireing but i don't know if ill understand it. Anyways i'v got a freind buying me the wireing i dont know what it is tho.

What do you guys think of my set up so far.. is the 400 watts going to push those subs or next should i look at getting a new JL amp?

Yup the Big 3 is the way to go. Basicaly its about having the same size power wire in your stereo as the wire coming from your Alt. - Battery, Battery Ground - Chasis, Engine block ground - Chasis.

As for your amp thats up to you. Its all about how much bass YOU want.

I want them to sound good and umm, more then most of my freinds lmfao.. They're running mostly MTX and clarions..
