you never want to run 8 gauge for a sony amp, because they demand a ton of power for so little...most i would recommend is about 400-600 watt range wouldnt go any higher then that.....but if your gunna be running a sony amp run at least 4 gauge.

Here is a chart for maximum amperage per given awg. American Wire Gauge table and AWG Electrical Current Load Limits with skin depth frequencies
As for MA Audio, I remember some of their amps and they are close to rated or rated, so they weren't that bad. For subs I don't know. Same goes for the brand you listed.
I am sorry I cannot agree with the poster above. Saying all amplifiers from Sony are inherently much less efficient and require double the wire size is just not true. There are some Sony amps that will do over rated power, with high s/n ratio and seperation and sound good doing it. Obviously not competition level, but meh.

well, i dont know my 1300 watt sony explode amp isn't producing power? the light bar will turn on, but it wont amp?? i dont understand whats wrong. on the amp gauge i can choose 0.3 and music will come out (not very loud) then when i turn it over 1-6 it stops playing music? is it broke or what?
also whould it make sence to have 8 gauge comeing from the battery to the cap then from the cap have 4 guage wire?

8 ga. to cap (which you are gonna hear all about i bet) and 4ga to amp = useless.. the amp can only take what the 8ga CAN give the cap so the 4 ga wont help at all.
the amp i would say if it aint new/warrenty take it apart n clean it? might be dust or somthing.

Isn't that amp 600 watts rms? 8 gauge is fine for amps up to 500 watts with 15 feet of length.
If the Sony doesn't work, then throw it out and buy something that will. There are many great deals on here in the used section and MR2NR is going out of business, so he will have some options for you as well.
The subs that you're looking at are cheap for a reason. As long as your expectations are low, you'll be fine.

well im just starting to learn about sound. next system i want a good one. i want a pair of 2 12'' (alpine type R / Very well known brand) around 1200Watt.
so im just trying to work with what i've got at the moment. at the moment i have a 1980's 170watt alpine amp on the 15'' sub. and its working pretty good for what it is. it masages my front seats alittle. but i want better in the future. im going to be buying a newer car soon and i want to deck it out. But i buy used speakers and subs. so i need to know what to look for and how to test the speakers
