Has any one else noticed this. I notice a lot of the guys who are into the db drags sort of have it in their heads that if they pull some high numbers they should be sponsered by the product they use.

"Guys you are just the same as every other consumer out there.

I don't notice it as much with consumers who are trying to build a nice SQ or trick looking install as much any more

"Mr retailer do you think if I buy all this gear that Visions, FS, or Kicker etc would sponser me"

any one else have thoughs on this?

I get it all the time

Yes, that happens a lot lately. I usually listen to what they have to offer and will discuss the state of "things", as one NEVER knows ,even if it doesn't stack up at the time. But what I understand is this in general for the average joe consumer:

1st car your build yourself on your own ticket and run it in the circles and prove you are serious and commited. This may take a year or three. Proof and more proof that your the real deal.

2nd car can get some partial sponsorship and lots of free help. People have taken notice and we have been shown that you have the right stuff.

3rd time around, you can get full sponsorship depending on how you did with #2 above. That not only includes showing up and commiting to the industry but how you act and behave as you're representing those that sponsor you.

We get tons of inquiries on sponsorship. They don't all follow this pattern as some of the things we do are corporate but I'll agree, the whoel sponsorship thing is the first thing out of a lot of people's mouths and yet they don't understand really the commitment level and how much of a JOB it is to be sponsored.

Passion is the biggest thing I look for.

Do you love this industry?

Passion is cool, but they also have to have a brain and be able to present themselves well. Also nothing worse then having a sponsored competitor that's passionate but an ego monkey and hard to approach/talk to.

You hit the nail on the head Tom... I've been through those motions myself in the last five years.

Passion AND commitment are the key words here IMO, I actually set up a contract for the people who would approach me. This "contract" outlines what we as a retailer would do for the "sponsoree" and what their commitment to us would be; attending and competing at a minimum of 6 shows per year at their own expense, two year contract, become a member of at least one competition organization AND accumulate enough points for a Finals invite, plus attend and compete at the Finals of those orgs.

The "contract" definitely weeded out the "wannabes" who were looking for free equipment and showed the ones who were serious about it that we are a professional organization, willing to commit to them if they were willing to commit to us.

I like the one where they come in asking to be sponsored and saying "you can write this off" !
I had to explain the term "write off" to this one idiot, I asked if he had a $20. bill, he handed it over(as an example, I wasn't going to keep it) and as he handed me the $20. I gave him a Loonie in return saying "here is your $20. back, you can write off the other $19 !! "
he finally got it!

from a sponsoree point of view. we started off with one sponsor(Exide batteries) and then the rest jumped on, we havent hit the highest scores ever, but we hit some of the highest around here. The scores arent what is impressive. its the team. passion yes, dedication yes. investment oh yes. we got dropped by 2 sponsors but got 3 new ones. so far we've gone thru 10 sponsors. some money is invested and some is made(for the sponsor) if the person your gonna sponsor has no focus and direction i would refuse them too. but there are many out there deserving of sponsorship.

The only thing i base it on is this. Miles(marketing manager at trends) has tonnes of guys wanting sponsorship on demo vehicles(from all accross canada) and his budget is set the previous year. so he can only choose a few. but he grabs money for it from marketing and promotions, and sales, and travels ext. he takes all those small amounts and directs those dollars to the right people. from small spl projects to massive demo cars. he is smart with how he does it and preps for it for months in advance. i know that this is harder on the retail level, but if not invested properly its just giving it away. investment is the key, the oterh investments must be done to get your sponsored items worth.
